Norfolk Road is lined with attractive three-storey houses dating from the 1830s, with the large double-bowed no.3 probably built by Wilds and Busby. It is a listed building, along with the bow-fronted nos.1-2, 18, 24-26, 37-39, 41-44 and 47. Norfolk Road Methodist Church was built in 1865 by C.O.Ellison, a Gothic building of flint with stone dressings and a south-eastern turret, but it was demolished in 1965 and Braemar House now occupies the site. It was the congregation of this chapel that founded the famous Dome Mission, originally at the Alhambra in King’s Road. The growing attendances at the services necessitated a move to the Dome in 1907, but it later found a home at the Dorset Gardens Methodist Church {62,123}.

  • I am clearing the estate of the John Smith who lived in Cowper Street. I have a photo of him playing the 2 manual organ in that church and another of the case front. Please contact me by e-mail and I will forward scanned copies to you for your record. If you have any details of this organ it would be very welcome please – the church is not recorded on the National Pipe Organs Register. [Hello, Mark.
