Devonshire Place
Brighton's first purpose built synagogue 1838
By Trevor Chepstow
This beautiful Georgian style building in Devonshire Place has been awarded a 'Blue Plaque' in honour of David Mocatta (1806-1882) who remodelled this building in 1838 as the City's first purpose built synagogue.
Up until July-2004 the building was the 'Shape Health Club' and has now been completely renovated in to modern apartments whilst retaining its imposing Georgian exterior.
