A 1930s view from a window

The seafront as seen from an Embassy Court balcony c1930s
From the private collection of Trevor Chepstow

This unusual photo was taken from one of the balconies of Embassy Court (possibly the ninth or tenth floor) and shows Brighton in the mid 1930’s in all her glory.  The first building to the left with the flagpole is ‘Berkeley Court’ and shows quite clearly how most of the buildings on the seafront had gardens.

In the distance you can see how magnificent the West Pier looked in its heyday decked out in flags and looking as good as the day it was built.  Going west from the pier would have been the boating pool and various gardens culminating in the ‘Sunken Garden’ just before the beginning of Hove.  The lines of parked black cars on the seafront indicate that parking may have also been a problem in those days!
