Max Miller
Max's Fundraising Garden Party
By Jennifer Drury
Comedian and entertainer Max Miller, who was born in Brighton in 1894 and died here in 1963, was surely one of the city's most famous sons. Max was a top liner for over three decades and starred in all the top theatres in the country. Such is Miller's enduring appeal that groups like the Max Miller Appreciation Society continue to work to keep his memory alive.
Recently the MMAS hosted Max's Garden Party at the Pavilion Garden Cafe, New Road, Brighton, a show-business event with all profits going to the Entertainment Artistes' Benevolent Fund/Brinsworth House in Twickenham. Entertainers who attended included June Brown, Derek Martin, Carol Cleveland, Jack Seaton, Lady Ratlings and guest of honour Alf Pearson (95).
