Comedian and entertainer Max Miller, who was born in Brighton in 1894 and died here in 1963, was surely one of the city's most famous sons.  Max was a top liner for over three decades and starred in all the top theatres in the country.  Such is Miller's enduring appeal that groups like the Max Miller Appreciation Society continue to work to keep his memory alive.

Recently the MMAS hosted Max's Garden Party at the Pavilion Garden Cafe, New Road, Brighton, a show-business event with all profits going to the Entertainment Artistes' Benevolent Fund/Brinsworth House in Twickenham. Entertainers who attended included June Brown, Derek Martin, Carol Cleveland, Jack Seaton, Lady Ratlings and guest of honour Alf Pearson (95).

Following on the success of its last Garden Party, the Max Miller Appreciation Society is holding a Cheeky Chappie Charity Garden Party on Sunday 8 August 2010 in the Pavilion Gardens, New Road. Rub shoulders with celebrities and help raise funds for St Dunstan's and the Mayor's charities. David Sewell of the Pavilion Gardens Cafe has very generously agreed to provide refreshments. Entrance is just £20 and tickets can be obtained from Mrs Jo Blake on 01273 461082 or email josephine.blake@talktalk.net
