The first specifically Methodist Church in Brighton or Hove was built on the site of the current Dorset Gardens Methodist Church. The Wesleyan Methodist Church which opened on 26th August, 1808 was the first of three churches built on the site. As part of this year’s bi-centenary celebrations, the Brighton and Hove Methodist circuit has published a history of the church, written by Michael R Hickman.
The history is a meticulously researched and well presented account of the life of the Dorset Gardens Methodist Church and community. Mr Hickman’s text not only chronicles the history of the growth of the church and the founding of the Dome Mission, it also gives a fascinating glimpse into the lives of many individuals from both the church and laity. It is well illustrated with maps, many photographs, and supported by extensive appendices.
