Elm Grove

Fish Shop owned by Cook family
By Carol Trotman (nee Breeds)

A cousin who lives in Brighton has done some research and the fish shop at 207 Elm Grove was owned by the Cook family, not the Breeds family.  My great grandmother Katherine Breeds (older lady in photo below) and Elizabeth Cook were good friends, and Katherine worked for her in the shop.

The proprietor of the shop was listed as Edward Cook from the 1890's onwards, although the number then was 138. At number 136 was a Miss Lydia Mayled, a grocer. By 1905 the shop at number 207 was listed as Cook & Mayled, but from shortly thereafter reverted to Edward Cook. He continued to be listed there until around 1916.

Fantastic photo. It's nice to see any pics from the Elm Grove area as I haven't seen many. Whereabouts up Elm Grove would this shop have been? It looks to me as if it's between Totland and Sandown Road. Thanks for putting it on!

That's exactly where it was. Isn't there a fish and chip shop roughly there still? There was one opposite the top of Queen's Park Road.

I thought so. The chip shop is on the next block down between Bernard Road and Totland Road opposite the Race Horse pub.

I checked it out today and it's where I thought it was. It is now Channel Double glazing. Would like to take a picture now so you could compare but not sure how if I can add it to this thread? Carol, if you're not in Brighton then let me know your email address and I'll send you a picture of how it looks today.

My grandparents used to live here in the late 60s early 70s. I used to spend my summer holidays there every year. Next door there was a fruit shop and next door to that was a toffee shop.

I used to live in the premises connected to the shop. When we moved in it was then a cafe which was approximately in 1965/66. We left in 1973 to emigrate to Australia. The shop remained empty for a while after we moved in and then it was a knick knack type shop, then an second hand shop. Next door was the greengrocers, run for a while by the Bliss family and I think next door on the other side was a betting shop. It was opposite a T intersection the name of which I can't remember. I used to go to Elm Grove High School. Of which I have many fond memories. If anyone remembers me I would love to hear from them.

I was born at 207 Elm Grove on 30th September 1961. My father was a shoe repairman at this premises and we lived in the accommodation attached. The following year we moved to Crawley. My family emigrated to Australia in September 1966. I am coming to Brighton in January 2010 with my family to show them where I was born. I have a great photo of me as babe in arms outside the shop similar to photo currently shown.

Editor's note: if you scan the photo (300dpi & 100%) and send it with some accompanying text, I will publish it on the site for you. Email to me at jennifer@mybrightonandhove.org.uk
