Local events 2009

June 27th in previous years was marked as ‘Veterans Day’. This year the date has been renamed as ‘Armed Forces Day’ to incorporate tributes to not only to ex-service men and women, but also serving armed forces and cadets.

Appreciation for dedication
Over 200 events up and down the country were staged so that people could gather to show their pride in, and appreciation for, the country’s military. Side by side they stood, the veterans of World War II and the serving soldiers of more recent conflicts. Age and youth were united in the pride of service to their country.

A whirlwind tour
The Mayor of Brighton and Hove, Councillor Mrs Ann Norman, accompanied by her husband and Consort, Councillor Ken Norman, went on a whirlwind tour of the various Armed Forces Day events held in the city. It was a great opportunity for the Mayor to meet representatives of the armed forces, both retired, serving and training, to express our thanks for their dedication.
