Streets for People: car free event

For today’s Streets for People event, hundreds of residents and visitors ditched the car, hopped on the bus, train or bike or simply walked their way to an afternoon of fun and entertainment in the city centre today.

Pedestrian friendly spaces
The event was part of the council’s JourneyOn initiative which promotes healthier and more active ways of living in our city. This year’s car free day celebration transformed areas around The Lanes and New Road, into traffic-free, pedestrian friendly spaces with live music, performances and activities for everyone to enjoy.

An enchanted forest and street entertainment
Visitors loved the enchanted forest at Bartholomews and experienced a wonderful woodland full of surprises. Brighton based artists 100w created the sights, sounds and smells of a forest in the middle of the street. Jubilee Square, outside the library, was transformed into a village green with plants and deckchairs for relaxing, while visitors to New Road were entertained by street poets, rappers and ranters. Little East Street hosted an afternoon of live music where visitors could pull up a log and enjoy the giant tepee stage. 

A great day of fun – and not a car in sight!
