Call for classmates
I joined this school in September of 1966, as Pat Horrobin, with a few friends from St Mark’s School. Where are you now Janet Preston, Linda Phillips, Merle Blakely and Janice Clark? A few boys came too – Stuart Holland and other names that I cannot locate any more!
A schoolgirl revolt
I was pleased to join up again with Zena Matyszac, who I had not seen since nursery school days at St Paul’s. We are still in touch and I recently reminded her of an incident, probably in about 1967. She has no recollection of it and my memory is vague, but we held some sort of revolt, running up and down the playground and refusing to cooperate with staff. That got us in to trouble and called up to Mr Tibble, the headmasters office.

I went to Queens Park School and left in 1967. I remember so many things about that school. Miss Gray who was more scary than Mr Tibble (for us girls anyway), she always reminded me of the Queen Mother and would insist that I removed my make up (I’m not wearing any Miss honest) when I thought I looked like Dusty Springfield. Miss Highgate who was sooo glamorous. Mr Millthorpe. My own favourite was Mr Metcalf. I loved boxing and history so was a bit of a teacher’s pet. I was in Caburn house (motto “stands alone”) but longed to be in Ditchling cos that’s where all the good looking boys were. I also remember the trip to the playing fields for games and having lessons in All Souls church with an open fire…
Ron Metcalf was a very good friend of mine when I first started teaching in Brighton and I did some temporary work at QPS in 1950, when I had just finished National Service. I was soon in the boxing fraternity, eventually becoming a judge and referee in Middlesex. I wonder if you knew that Ron was an early invader of the Normandy beaches in 1944 (within the first week) and had a grenade thrown at him which exploded but the blast passed across his back harmlessly.
My dad, Reginald Laycock, went to Queens Park School, he was born in 1932 so must have attended from around 1937 to 1946.My mum, Marion Dabson, went to the senior school around 1944 until 1948. They have some very amusing memories of the teachers! Also my friend Joy Stoner went there in 1966, so Tricia may remember her.
Is that Joy Stoner who used to live in Islingword Street?
I was at Queens Park for roughly about a year from 1965 to 1966 before moving up to Scotland with my mother. I remember some of the teachers; Mr Crumb, Moody Metcalf, he did history lessons, Mr Hughes was our form teacher and taught English lessons. We travelled over to Sheepcoat Valley for sports lessons mainly rugby. Cross country running round Queens Park itself. Speech and Drama lessons at a small annexe place just up the hill from the school. Does anybody remember me? Probably not. Some of the guys in my class were Mick Salter, David Tourle, Keith Robleido, Paul Lambert, and Trevor Paterson. Girls were Diane Terry, Sharon Warner, can’t really remember the rest.
I was at Queens Park from 1966 and my friends there were Tricia Leonard who has contacted me, Janet Preston, Merle Blakeley, Linda Phillips and Joy Stoner. Joy lived in a large house on the corner of Freshfield Road and later moved to Foredown Drive, Portslade. Is this the same Joy that’s been mentioned before?
I think Joy Stoner used to live in Islingword Rd, then moved to the corner of Freshfield. We went to St Luke’s Juniors together. Does anyone hear from her?
I was at Queens Park 1965 -1968. I was in the C classes right through. Roger Krum I remember was a good teacher who did geography (helped me a lot in my teens). I wonder does anyone know what happened to him?
I left this school in 1957. I remember teachers like Miss Gray, and Mr Metcalf. It was quite difficult as I had to follow on from two older sisters. In fact my younger sister refused to go to this school, her words were,”I wont stand a chance after you three”.
I attended QP school from September 1964 to July 1970. In those days I had the different surname of ‘Ritchie’. My memories of this school I have to say are mixed, but I suppose things were different in those days. I recall that for the first couple of terms that I was there form 1A’s form room was situated in an old primary school building with open fireplaces located a considerable distance away in (I think) Essex Street, which was subsequently entirely demolished. After that our form room became Room 8 in the main building. First year form teacher was the all too memorable Mr McNeff. I also recall occasionally taking speech training/drama lessons in the Park Hill annex mentioned above, I believe it was the crypt of a small former church building? Right next door to the school building in those days was the body repair works of the Southdown Bus Company, and a little distance down Park Street was a sweet shop run by a Miss Barnet. Particularly remembered friends from my six years at QP would include: David Maplesden, Andrew Morgan, Carl Davies, Keith Denyer, Andy Basford, Nigel Medhurst, Geoff Bowers, Brian Southern, Ian Newman, David Habgood, David Hughes, Michael Brown, Phillip and John Jack, David Adams, K. Nangi (from 1968), Lawrence Boarer, Mervin Coombes, Phillip Pelling, Sally Singer, Shelly Phillips, Lynn Maxwell, Janice Meechen, Margaret Butterfield, Elaine Nelson. Mr Tibble was headmaster throughout my time in the school, and taught GCE classes for English language in his panelled study during my last year there.
I went to Queen’s Park with my brothers Danny and Tony. I left in 1960. I lived in George Street.
I went to Queens Park up until 1975. Friends were Freddy Hughes, Molly Mercer and Barry Bradbury. Hated the place I have to say. Would love to hear from Fred if anyone knows him though.

I went to Queens Park School, which in my day was Park Street, between 1946/195 – quite good at sport mostly athletics. Best days of my life. I lived in Islingwood Road and Southampton Street at the time. I remember Metcalf and a Mr Martin who attended the 1948 Olympics in London. I remember he was very quick to come back with an answer. One time one pupil who was laying on a bench at a PT lesson said he was “laying on a crack sir”, Mr Martin said “One of these days you will be glad of that”. He was a great teacher, he was always ready to have a laugh. Some of names I can remember were Ray Cole, Albert Ovette, Jacky Graham was a school captain Rosemary Burgess, Paddy Wadey, Mickey Beasant and Johnny were very good at boxing - to name a few in one of my classes. I went to Queen’s Park School from 1960-1964. I moved there from Elm Grove School. I remember Mr Metcalf, John Bradley and Peter Root. I now live in Cornwall
I was a student at Queens Park between 1949 and 1951. I remember most of the teachers mentioned. I was in class 1A and 2A during those years, also a member of the school football team that won the A F Farmer League. I still have the certificate. Also remember a girl Dianne Blanchad who was in class 3 or 4 during those years. She was very pretty but alas I lost contact many years ago. It was good to visit this site and St Marys it brings back old memories.
I went to QPCS from 1952-1956. Mr Richardson and Tibble were headmasters. Miss Gray and Miss Chaplin were formidable teachers. Mr. Hoare was the favorite of the girls and Mr. Millthorpe was a bit scary. Ron Metcalfe was a great history teacher. My friends were Jane Morrison, Wendy Funnel, Jennifer Richards, Janet Gwilliam. Zena Morgan, Josie Mitchell and Pearl Atkin.s Most of us went to St. Mary’s VP school as well. Would love to hear from any of you or your family members. I live in Pinehurst, North Carolina where my husband and I retired to from Morristown, NJ five years ago. Have lived in the USA for forty years, but still visit Brighton when I can.

Hello Gwen, I spent the four years that I was at Queens Park in the same class as you. I remember you well along with Wendy Funnel, Kate Meadows etc. I had a long conversation with Bert Hoare just before he died and he told me that he was in touch with Joyce Winter. I attended several reunions in the past few years. The only member of our class that I met was Micheal Dearing.
I went to QPS, I must admit, I didn’t like it. I did enjoy cooking with Miss Smith. I remember Phil Lamburt. I was known as Scottie, I use to live in Tillstone Street.
I attended Queen’s Park from 1962-1966, great days overall. I remember running around Queens Park in PE with Ron Metcalf keeping a beedy eye on us all to make sure we did not cut across the park. A few names from my class:- Brian Brown, Chris Stokell, Alan Partridge, Chris Evans, Ian Wickins, Chris Ruffell, Alistair Lang, Geoff Farmer, Katrina Marchant, Susan Tann, Joan Phillips, Andrea Warner. Games periods were held at East Brighton Park, I was House Captain of Wilmington, Burt Hoare was House Teacher. I remember Brian Moody, Mr Milthorpe, Mr Hugues, Mr Tomsett to name but a few.
I attended Queens Park Secondary Modern and I would be very interested to know how many people remember me. I was in C class throughout between 1970 and 1976. As I’ve already said before, I attended Queen’s Park secondry modern school between 1970-1976. I remember Mr Moody Ron Metcalf from when I done the Duke of Edinburgh award at Burwash, also Mr Hughes, Mr Milthrope deputy head master if my memory serves me right and Mr Tibble was headmaster. Mr Hoare, Miss Gray and Mr Tomsett. I was in Ditchling House, I was always trying to get out of cricket as I hated the sport…lot of runs round the old tip at Wilson Avenue. Moved to Brighton in 1955 from London. Was at Queen’s Park Secondary for a short time prior to passing the 13+ and moving on to Varndean. Anyone remember the name of the English Teacher Miss/Mrs? who taught there at that time? Ian Hunt Alberta, Canada.
I remember a lot of the names. Hugh Hazelton and Richard Golds mention also Mr Turner who was form Teacher and taught music. He also took games at east Brighton where I remember pulling his track suit down when he said James you will tackle me when playing rugby. He never asked again.

Hi Ian Hunt, I believe the English teacher at that time was Miss Chaplain. Miss Davis was Science teacher followed by Mrs. Patterson. Mr. Yates was art teacher followed by Oscar Tomsett. I also remember a very young and handsome teacher coming in just before I left in 1956, but I do not remember his name or which subject he taught. Did you know Albert Marchant?, he was a great boxer at the time. Also am I correct in thinking that Paul Schofield the famous British actor attended Queens Park school? Let me know who you remember in classes.
I’ve rememberd an incident that happend to me during my spell at Queens Park. There was a teacher called Mr Smith that took wood work classes, when our class was taking its turn at his workshop after being told never to hit the chisels without the blade in contact with the job in hand, I did! Several times and the blade shot out of the handle and bounced across the floor blunting the edge. Mr mith went bonkers and gave me six of the very best that he could muster. After sitting in the playground for the rest of the lesson he told me that I had to sweep up the workshop after the class had gone. Whilst doing as asked I noticed that Mr Smith had left a bunch of keys on his desk so I picked them up and was on my way to give them back too him, but the little devil on my shoulder whisperd in my ear and told me too drop them in the boiling glue pot that was at the back of the room! Hmmm, good idea I thought, just as I let them go he came into the room looking for them,catching me in the act. Oh well it was another six, but this time from Mr Metcalfe, bet he had a secret laugh.
Hi all former class mates, I attended Queens Park school from 1952-1956 and was in the b stream throughout my four years. I used to help to assemble the boxing ring, at different schools and locations (like the Brighton Dome) with the help (or hinderance of Mr Metcalf ha ha). I was also in the school chess team (only to make the number up I think). Reading through your many comments bought back many happy memories of my years at Queens Park.

Queens Park – there between 68-73 my mates were Frances Knight, Kay Jackson, Lisa Thomsett, Julie Cosham and more but cannot recall surnames. My older brother Steve was there before he left for Longhill. I lived in Windmill Street and all our friends lived close by, not like now. I can remember pushing schoolmates in the pond at Queens Park- sorry for that now. I am still living in Brighton, love the place- anyone remember me?
I left QPS at 15, wanting to stay on but had to work in order to help financially support the household. Was in the A stream, my twin brother, Michael, in the B. I remember with affection, Mr. Thomsett and Mr. Bunker who always gave me A’s, the former for Art, the latter for French, a new subject at the school, and to Miss Chaffinch who introduced me to classical music, for which I am eternally indebted. Thank you all. Wished I could have stayed on longer.
Hi i was wondering if any body knew my Dad Reg Freeman. He went to Queen’s Park Secondary School around 1961 and lived in Lincoln street?
Hi Lee Burton, are you the Lee Burton that I used to bunk off school with to go fishing in the rock pools and make our own lead sinkers in Frey Bentos tins on your mum’s stove? Some other common friends were Colin Haley, Mike Bjarky and Garry Brown. I was there from 1970 – 1975 in 1A then in the B stream. I was in Ditchling house and I do remember Mr. Tibbles, Metcalfe, Moody, Hughes, Miss Hourie (French) Anthony Harvey, Bentinck and my favourite teacher was Oscar Thomsett. I was also one of the kids who prefered to run around the tip and later along the coast and back through Ovingdean. We lived in Sussex street and I was pushed into the pond on my second day at school!
I attended QPS 1971 – 1976 and remember all the teachers mentioned in the various comments. At the time getting wrapped across the knuckles seemed a tad harsh however. If anyone recalls, Les Perkins, Ben Blackston, Paul Woods, Tony Burbidge drop me a line.

Hi everyone, I went to QP from 1963-1965 after St. Lukes in Finsbury Rd closed down. My classmates at St. Lukes were Steve Ferrone, Chris Blackwell, Phil Byford, Jeff Saunders, Barry Wells. I remember Freddy Pont and Henry Mears in my year.
I attended Queen’s Park Secondary School from 1970 to 1975. I have many good memories. In particular achieving bronze, silver and gold in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. I cannot praise this scheme enough and am so pleased that my daughter is now taking part in this at Cardinal Newman School. I help organise annual get-togethers for ex QP pupils and teachers. There are several teachers who regularly attend – Mr Metcalfe, Mr Thompsett, Mr Bentinck, Mr Tolhurst and Mr Moody. Sadly Mr Hoare died in 2009, but he also used to attend. Hello, I lived in Claremont St and went to Queens Park which was in Park Street then from 1947-1950. We all hated Metcalfe. Does anyone remember Dick Lewery or Eric Barnarn? I had a crush on a girl named June Hall. I now live in British Columbia, Canada. I moved in 1966. I would love to hear from someone.
I attended Queens Park in 1945/47 for a year after arriving from Somerset. Miss Tidy was the head teacher, Mr Phillips was my form teacher and Pat Martin was my best sports teacher. I played for Brighton Boys under-15 football team during the 46/47 season. My parents owned a boarding house in Lower Bedford Street where I used to hang around with Peter Funnell and ‘Onky’ Foster. Later I joined the gang at the Boys Brigade in Baker’s Bottom with Charlie and Donald Kirby, Keith Holder, Dickie Alderton, Donald Pontin etc. What a good football team we had there. After leaving Queens Park, I served an engineering apprenticeship at CVA Portland Road and attended the ‘Tech’ for 5 years to get qualified as a Production Engineer. Anyone remember me? I would like to hear from you.
Stumbled on this site whilst trying to locate some old school pals. So far have tracked down Alan Middleurst, Phil Grundy and Andy Durrant, so still a fair few to go. Did bump into Albert Bullock and Mike Gee a few years ago in Dover, but sadly didn’t keep in touch. Love to get in touch with a few others. Most of the teachers were characters, I remember when first joined the school, having English with ‘Bungalow Bill’, whilst he spent the lesson popping aspirin. I attended Queen’s Park from about 1965-1970. I remember Hugh Hazelton (Ritchie) and everyone you’ve mentioned Hugh, in particular Margaret Butterfield, David Maplesden, Andrew Morgan, Carl Davies. Leon Farmer – I remember you too, and those you have mentioned. One of my friends was Lin Cheung who was in a different class. We are still good friends today. I remember Mr Tibble going around in his black gown and mortar board and Mr Millthorpe who used to keep a cane in the sleeve of his jacket whilst wearing it. Metcalf seemed to be forever caning boys in the middle of the hall and then ordering them to say “Thank you sir”. Scary Miss Gray was headmistress and housecraft teacher. We had to make and embroider our own cookery apron and hat in the needlework lessons. All the girls in the school had to also sew their own summer uniform which was made from royal blue poplin with a white collar. We had to buy the fabric from Vokins. One of the nicest teachers was Oscar Thomsett who taught art and who always generously gave me A+. I used to hide in the art room to get out of PE and away from those horrible hockey sticks and playing fields.

I attended this school from 1968 to my 5th year in 1971. I remember how they would lock the gates to stop you from leaving after registration and that bits of broken glass were cemented into the tops of the wall to prevent you from climbing over the wall to get out. I was in classes 2A 3B 4B and the 5th form. I made some great friends like Geoffery Burt who is in Perth Australia now and Niel Southon who lived at 22 Park Street but moved to highgate South London the last I heard of him, Phillip and Alan Cooper,Ian Taylor, Richard Bishop, Michael Little,Michael Taylor, David Brown, Robert Gurl,Robin Stuart, Phillip Taylor and many others who’s names I forget. For our physical education lessons when it rained we would run around the corporation rubbish tip. This run was about 5 miles long and it was always very cold and wet. Mr Metcalf would sit in his warm car near the half way mark to make sure no one cut across the centre to shorten their run. The outside toilet at the school in the boys’ playground was a shed against the out side wall facing Park Street; it had a long ventilation strip at the top where the boys used to crowd into the cubical for a smoke at break time. It looked like the Queen Mary with the smoke coming out the funnels. I never had a school picture at Queens Park I don’t know if they ever took any? We had a lot of fun at Queens Park just up the road always watching out for the park keeper, I remember things like the Spa catching on fire and the draining of the pond and the thousands of carp fish inside. I went to Queen’s Park from 1972 to 74, my friends were Sue and Lynne Hardwick and Denise Bradbury, who I remember were all very pretty. I loved the school. I remember we had a very strict headmaster but cannot remember his name. Also a teacher who used to storm into the classroom and say “I’m on the war path this afternoon” – he was so scary and would always throw a book at one of the boys.
I was brought up 91, Islingwood Road Brighton, I was born in 1958. My first school was St Luke’s school in the 1960s, then I went to Queen’s Park before moving to Worthing in 1971. It was not nice leaving the school and all the kids I grew up with.
I was at Queen’s Park from ’71-74. Have very fond memories of Mr Metcalfe and Mr Hoare, they both taught my dad, Peter Catt, dad being a good boxer! Can remember Mr Bentinck, he was my tutor in years 4 and 5, and Mr Tibble as aforementioned. Was a mostly happy time for me.
I attended Queens Park from 1962-1966and loved every day of it! My friends were Linda Gates, Lynn Chapman, Margaret Cox, Carol Hotston and lots more who’s names don’t come back so easily. I went along to the Queens Park reunion that happens every year - it’s well worth going. I still see a few teachers from time to time around Brighton - it’s amazing that they are not really that much older than I am, they just seemed it at the time.
I attended QP from 1966-67 (then moved to Patcham Fawcett) – not my choice! I was in the same class as Janet Preston, Lesley Bennett, Linda Philips, Janet Tranmere, Teresa Wilson, Terry Smith, Mike Lineham, David Head to name a few and knew Janice Clark and Merle Blakely well. A bunch of us used to go ice skating together and got quite close friends. I used to see Janice quite often around the Woodingdean shop area in the early 80s – she still looked young and gorgeous (silly me only said ‘hello’ once or twice) and Lesley and I used to be neighbours in Peacehaven until 1985 – we never spoke much because I was away in Saudi Arabia most of the time. The strangest event happened in Gosport, Hampshire in 1974 whilst stationed there with the Royal Navy – I was on a bus going into town, when a soft girls voice kept calling “Steve,Steve…”, I turned around to see a beautiful young lady and imagine my surprise to see it was Teresa Wilson. She had married one of my friends from Patcham Fawcett (Nigel Paine) who also joined the Navy. Although Teresa used to visit often (she used to live appx. 200m away), we lost touch when I was posted away – Nigel was a submariner and I was a helicopter crewman so as we were ‘poles apart’, we’ve never met from Patcham until this day. Teresa used to work in a bank in Fareham then. If only we knew then, what we know now, things would have been much better. It would be good to hear from old classmates/friends on captain01@sky.com
I went to Queens Park in the 70s, until we ‘merged’ with Whitehawk, then on to Stanley Deason. I recall Mr Tibble caning me in his dark, panelled office after letting me choose the thickness of the cane; Polly Milthorpe hitting me (and others) on the knuckles with a blackboard rubber; and Bert Hoare throwing chalk at me for talking in class. I remember Mr Metcalfe – I thought he was a ***** but I know he commanded a lot of respect. My problem was that I was the complete opposite of my high-achieving older brother John, who had been School Captain when he was there, and Metcalfe loved him. I emigrated to Australia in 1987; I live in Brisbane and have a 25 year old son.

Happy days at Queens Park 1956-60. I recall those respected teachers, Mr Tibble, Mr Milthorpe, Mr Metcalf, Mr Hoare, Mr Smith, Mr Tompsett, Mr Moody, Miss Grey, Mrs Patterson, Mrs Reed and Miss Chaffinch. The strap and cane feelings still linger in my mind ouch!! A very strong boxing ambition promoted by Mr Metcalf did the school proud. Some school names recalled: D.Smith, P.Meeching, M.Parnell, R.Botting, C.Bowles, D.Dalton, J.Gunn, J.Mercer, Mary Yelland, Kay Bradshaw, Maureen Sharp and from a distance Gwen Barnes, Ann Gunn and Billy Dainty. Practice sessions around Queens Park had you on your toes under the beady eye of Mr Metcalf. Great to read about you all.
I went to Queens Park Country Secondary school from 1957 to 1959 after returning from Tripoli, Lybia My teacher was Mr Metcalf. Janine Mcquillan.
I have pictures of George Emerson, Susan Tann, 69/70 prefects and a picture of them amongst a group on a D of E gold medal expedition, Barry Bradbury, Paul Patterson, Alan Cooper, Terrence Hart, Susan Brittain and a group picture of 70/71 prefects. I’ve sent them on to Jenny.
My funniest memory was near to Christmas when the likeable Aider Parrish, having had a few drinks, went up to Mr Metcalf, whispered “I love you Mr Metcalf” and planted a kiss on his bald dome. Then holding some mistletoe over his head called out: “come on girls give me a kiss” and a couple of girls (I won’t mention their names) rushed over for a long smooch.
I was at Queens Park around 1955. I too remember lots of the teachers. Does any one remember me? I lived in Edward St, over my dads spare car parts shop. The pub and café were across the road from us, toilets on the corner. My last name was Guidi.
I attended Queens Park from 1958 to 1961. I remember many of the teachers mentioned by other people who were there around that time. Mr. Tibble was the Headmaster and I believe we were the first group of students to write our O levels and A levels. My memory was jogged today when I came across an old address book with many of my classmates names, I wonder where you all are now? I emigrated to Canada in 1967 where I still live in Calgary with my husband and family. If there is anyone who remembers me, it would be fun to hear from you.

I went to Queens Park school from 1969 to 1970, then we moved to Worthing. I went to St Luke’s infants and juniors first, then Queens Park. I lived at 91, Islingword Road. I was Lesley Colwell and I had a younger sister Kathleen Colwell and an older brother Andy Colwell and I was born in Brighton in 1958? It would be nice if anyone remembers us.
Having stumbled onto this site, as an old boy I started to read the comments. The entry by Hugh Hazelton (15/01/2010) blew thick cobwebs away and I remember him and all those mentioned. Phil & John Jack were my best buddies. The thought of Sally Singer still makes my pulse race! All contact lost once I left to join the RAF but I have more happy memories than sad ones. Mr Metcalfe’s history lessons were wonderful, he always wore a tracksuit & trainers, a hot cup of tea often in his hand. Firm but fair he was my favorite as he pushed me to do the D of E Award. As a result he took us all to Buckingham Palace – my late mum had such a day. The art lessons with Mr Tomsett, English Language with Mr Hughes (who always wore a bow-tie) who could often be steered away from the lesson by a well placed question which could result in a story that could last until the bell went! The smell of the glue pot in woodwork stays with me still and the taste of the Beano Pies from St James Street pie shop. We live in Gloucester now but I cannot hear ‘Baggy Trousers’ without being dragged back to those happy schooldays. Thanks to Hugh Ritchie (now Hazelton) for reminding me how lucky I was to go there.
I left Queens Park at Easter 1959. I remember every one of those teachers and because I was good at needlework I sat and covered the three ropes from the boxing ring in some sort of tarpaulin. The cane and the throwing of the chalk rubber was not only for the boys, I remember it well. My best friends were Mary Yelland (made her wedding dress) 61/62 and Denise Desjarlais. My brother Ken Dare and I lived in Devonshire Street. Boy was I glad to leave.

Amazing what you discover on the internet when you have time on your hands. Yes, I remember all mentioned by Hugh Hazelton (15.01.2010) and of course I remember Andy Bashford (27.11.2014). With me being such a bashful soul at QP, concentrating on basketball, rugby, cricket, boxing and DofE, unlike my pals, had no time to talk to the girls! So likely the female fraternity during my time will not remember me – so I am hoping the lads remember me! I look back with wonderful memories and such a shame to read the same comments throughout… “shame we lost contact”. It must be our age, for I certainly tend to reflect more and wonder where people I went to school with are now. Sentimental old fool I am! I remember all the names Mr Tibble, Metcalve, Moody, Tolhurst, Hoare, Miss Gray who took the boys for cookery. There around 1958, spent lots of time with Raymond Bruce, Trevor Ellis, Ken Driscoll, David Colinson, David Tennant and Paul Benham.
I just stumbled on this site and was amazed that I remember so many of the names mentioned. I was at Queens Park from 1968 until 1972. I used to live in Elmore road and was mates with John Gillam, Dean Turner and Jeff Howell.

I attended Queens Park School from 1959 thru 1964. I remember Ron Metcalf very well as he seemed to call out my name daily for a butt warming reward! Thomsett was the Art teacher, Moody Tibble and my favorite teacher to look at was Miss Homer who taught French. I was best friends with David Edwards and several others in my class. Bernice Smith, Carol Ford and others also were part of the attending class. I joined the East Sussex Fire Brigade and emigrated to the USA in 1972. Linda – I lived in Hereford Street overlooking Essex Street and All Souls School when Mr Brookshaw was caretaker there. I went to Queens Park Infants but not the secondary school. I did know the Brookshaws and have written about them in the section relating to All Souls Church. I don’t remember a Susan Brookshaw. There was I think one son John, and sisters Audrey and Ann. Both John and Ann are deceased now. Audrey has written something about them on the All Souls Church page. I hope the reunion goes well.

I went to Queen’s Park in 1969-1974. I can’t remember many teachers. I used to model at the art school in Ditchling and Ian Thomset painted my portrait and I still have it. I also modeled for Mrs Pearson who lived in Ditchling – she painted me many times.
Wow! I have just stumbled onto this site from San Francisco, looking for the exact name of my secondary school in 1961-63. Mr Metcalfe was my form teacher for third form and history I think, Mr Hoare for maths maybe, Miss Gray for cookery. I remember the Head, Mr. Tibble – my brother, Stephen Hoff had more contact with him, on the end of a cane. The last names of my friends, Madeline (and younger sister Allyson), Jennifer and Jane escape me; and Barbara Greene. Two of the best years of my life, before we left for India and then back home to California.
I came across these pages faily recently and found lots of interesting memories. Pat Bowkett (Dare) I remember the scratching of those boxing ring ropes against my back so thanks for the needlework. I left in 1957 and new your brother Kenny. I also remember my sister Mary’s wedding dress. I have told her about your recent contribution here and will try to get you back in touch if you would like that.
Me and my brother both went to Queens Park would like to catch up with some old friends.
I went to Queens Park after being expelled from B&H Grammar school for not doing homework and generally not working hard. A pity to have wasted what was probably a great opportunity I now know, but having just retired from an enjoyable and successful lifetimes work as a Golf Professional perhaps all is not lost after all. I certainly did not work hard at QP other than at Sports which I thoroughly enjoyed with reasonable success. I remember some very nice people at the school, Alan Middlehurst, Laurence Gibson, Jan Debrowski and Alec Rawlings, to name just a few. There was a stunningly beautiful girl called Gillian Dubeau who, (I was informed many years later),left a Valentines card in my desk. I found it and thought that it had been mistakenly left there as I could not believe that anyone would send a Valentines card to me. I kept in touch with two of the Teachers after leaving the school, Mr Metcalfe and Mr Hoare and had great respect for Mr Hughes the English Master.
i didn’t realise the would be a section for my old school. I was at QP from 1959 until 1963. I should know Jeff Bullingham but I can’t remember him. I remember all the teachers; some of the pupils I remember are Fred Hearn,John Sims who I played with when I went to St. Marys; Derek Kimber, Alan Kelly, David Hendon,Freddy Pont. Ah happy days. Hi Phil Lambert. Sorry to take so long replying, I don’t get on this site too often! I moved out of Brighton too, in 1994. I love what it was but hate what it’s become. I still work in Brighton but live in mid-Sussex now, so it’s a 25-mile each way commute, 5 days a week. I’m in contact on Facebook, with Rick Hanmer and Syd Brimson (who lives in Canada now!) and saw Mike Oakes last year. I know Keith Davies and Gary Shortman are still around, but they didn’t reply to my messages. The rest – not a clue. I lost contact with Peter Broughton, who was my best mate at QP – I used to see him around, but not for about 10 years now. Did you know they hold regular school reunions? Last year it was at the school itself. Not many of the teachers are still around, but Mr. Thomsett and Mr. Bentinck are regulars at the reunions. Mr. Moody and Mrs. Wright turn up occasionally. Mr. Metcalfe was also a regular, but he was in a car accident a year or two ago, which smashed his hip. He was there in a wheelchair last year, but not well enough to attend, this year. No sign of your old favourite Miss Houri yet, though she IS still in the Brighton area. I used to see John Mears around and Kevin Douglas, who ended up marrying (or at least living with) Sharon Hope. Other than her, I’ve not seen hide nor hair of ANY of the girls from our class since I left. Glad you’re keeping well. All the best, Ron.

I’ve just been down Queen’s Park with my grand daughter. I don’t see anyone from school. Jonny Meats lives in Saltdean. Kevin and Sharon are still together, got two boys. Hi Gary. I got your message on FB. Great to hear from you. I live in Mid-Sussex now, but still work in Brighton. Health is holding out (famous last words!) and I can still do a fair impression of a 100-yard sprint – I’m only about a stone heavier now than I was when I left school at 15!
I was at school until 1968 and helped with last years fortieth anniversary of the school. Mr Metcalf and Mr Thomsett attended with many others. Sadly, Mr Metcalf passed away on the 24th August 2016. I meet up with lots of friends from school and keep in touch with many others. My brother, Dave Stevens, is three and a half years older than me. We used to live in Essex Street where the annexe (All Souls) was and the caretaker was Mr Brookshaw and his daughter was called Susan. Glyn Coombs came back to the UK last month from Sydney in Australia, he went there when he was 21. He met up with some old friends whilst he was here. We have lost some really lovely people in my year, Stuart Mackay, Phil Bonwick and now Dougie Eason. I meet up with Aileen Common, Pauline West, Sally Singer, Jeanette Pavitt and Zephyrin Chimahoski, Zena and Phil Cooper to name but a few. I am still trying to find out where Marilyn Bishop went to if anyone knows, she was my best friend at school and we lost contact many years ago. I married Barry Cocum and we had a daughter together but our marriage fell apart after seven years, it must have been the 7-year itch! There are so many memories that I could go on and on forever but I just wanted you to know about Mr Metcalf’s demise because he was a legend.
Hi, I attended the school late ’50s till early ’60s. I remember most of the teachers’ names – Metcalf, Hoare and Thomset etc but unfortunately none of my classmates. I do remember going on a ski trip to Switzerland around 1961. Please get in touch if you remember me.

John, I was sorry to hear about Mr Metcalf. I think you will find a number of people like me that were helped along the way by him at school and especially with D of E. I would be interested, and I think you should maybe put something in the Argus and there should be some sort of tribute to him.
Yes to a contribution John, but you may need to know his name was Robert Laurence Metcalfe (affectionately known as Met) not Ron as everyone seems to want to refer to him as. In regard to Linda Stevens’ posting of 31st August above, I am sorry to learn of the deaths of Mr. Metcalf along with Stuart Mckay last year, and Phillip Bonwick and Douglas Eason more recently. The latter three were all in the same year and class as myself, and I can remember them clearly. I attended the QP School reunion of February 2005, and on that occasion actually met up with both Stuart and Dougie along with many others including Linda herself plus Phillip Cooper and also Zephyrin Chimahoski whom I belive was also at the same primary school as myself (Fairlight). Of the other names mentioned I well remember Aileen Common, Sally Singer, and Marilyn Bishop. And the name Pauline West rings a very distant bell, but sadly I cannot place any specific memory to it. I was at Queens Park from about 1959 to 1963. I lived in Hampden Road off Elm Grove. I enjoyed reading what’s been written here but I haven’t seen anyone I remember. There are names I recognise but not anyone I knew.

Came about this thread quite by accident. Interesting to see so many people’s memories of their version of Queen’s Park Secondary. There is a dedicated Facebook site (a closed group) for ex pupils of Queenie. We are holding a reunion in Glasgow on the 19th of August and will post photographs of the night. It was a well loved school by most!
I wish I had known about the reunion, I would loved to have been there. I was at Queens Park 1953 until 1955 then my family moved to London. My best friend was Ann McCree but we lost touch.
I went to QP 1966-1972. Overall I met some great people and teachers. Certainly looking back I consider myself lucky to have gone here. Certainly a university of life.I became great frends with Met, who has sadly passed on however I am pleased to be in contact with Paul Bentink still.

I was at QP until ’67. I have to say I don’t share some of the good memories of people like Metcalf who I just found too intimidating to learn anything useful from. I was in Mr Moody’s form for the last year. Among the classmates I can remember Anthony Munday, Vivian Bradbury, Michael Buss and John Allen. The girls I remember were Pamela French, Lorraine Beaver, Pamela Flooder, and a girl called Barbara Campbell who Mr McNeff, a maths teacher would bait mercilessly. One day she ran out of the classroom in tears to which he exclaimed “ what on earth is wrong with the girl – is she having a period?” One of these posts described him as “memorable”. It’s been fun reading all the various posts. I lived in Southampton Street and then Eastern Rd, on the corner of Freshfield Rd. I got into engineering and became a toolmaker and then later, a design engineer. I married a girl I met at the ice rink (Patricia Sajnog who went to Cardinal Newman), in ’74 and we immediately went to the States. She was a real stunner and we were together for 44 wonderful years, 11 of them spent in Seattle, Washington. We came back in ’85 to be with our large family; she died of cancer in 2014. I still live in Brighton. Hi to anyone who remembers me.
Taking a look through this site as I regularly do, I was interested to read the entry by Andrew Vary of 9/1/2018 above. The poster who descibed Mr McNeff as “memorable” may well have been myself in my posting of 15/1/2010. As indeed he was, and entirely for the wrong reasons! I believe new to school at the same time that I started – Sept. 1964 – McNeff was initially 1A’s form master, first at the Essex Street annex, and then Room 8 in the main building. Big, burly and grey haired (although probably only in his mid-forties) he was alternatively a blustering bully, then your best friend, and then wheedling youngsters to bring in stamps and old coins to show him etc. And then straight back to the bully again. After several sick leaves I believe he left the school sometime in 1966. If McNeff is remembered for anything other than being the absolute worst of teachers, it would have to be for his catch phrase ‘foul youths’ when referring to and addressing pupils. Of the former pupils mentioned by Mr Vary I do remember Barbara Campbell, and also recognise the name Anthony Munday as I knew his sister Susan Munday for a while soon after leaving QP in the summer of 1970. Plus the name Pamela French I seem to recognise, but cannot put any certain memory to it.

I went to QPS from 1972 to 1975. I remember that me and my Friend Kim Hoyle used to go by taxi once a week to Barclays Bank London rd for Mr Tibbles, he would give us some money for doing that and we would spend it on sweets or Cigs. I liked it there I thought it was a good School it was much better than Whitehawk and Stanley Deason that I had to go to as they were changing the School from a Seniors to a Juniors. My Sister Carol went there too. My Brother Gary went to Patcham Fawcett then Whitehawk.
I have just gathered today that QP teacher Mr. Bryan Moody has just died. I remember him well from my time at QP (1964 – 1970) where he taught in particlar civics and economics. He led the last ever school trip I went on, which was to visit various locations in the City of London including the House of Commons, the Stock Exchange, the Royal Mint, St. Paul’s Cathedral etc., shortly before we sat our ‘O’ levels in the summer of 1970. I can still recall that that day concluded with watching an evening performance of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales at (I think) the New Theatre.
I am planning to come to the UK in 2019. I am wondering if anyone could give me details of Queens Park reunion date, time, cost and location I have not been back to the school since l left in1964. Was at QP from ‘52 until ‘55. I was the third brother to attend. Great memories of Harry and Graham and Norman Christie. I also remember Margaret Forsyth and Elsie Stobo and Ginty. Left Glasgow at age 17 to go see the world. Live in Australia now. 80 this year – anybody still alive???

I was a pupil at QPS. 1960-1962. I recall some names, Elsie Hill, who lived in Shawlands, Harry Baptie a friend and gymnast, David Miller who lived in Simshill as I did, his footballing and golf mate Robert Penman, David’s girlfriend’s surname was Cruikshanks whose brother was goalkeeper for Third Lanark . Of the Jewish students I recall Ruth Josephs, Irvine Waxman, Ronnie Gottlieb. I’d be very interested to hear from anyone….My own life became quite a roller coaster when I left that school at 17.
Like a few others I didn’t know about this site. It is so nice to look back and see some of the names of people I knew back at Queen’s Park.
I went to Queens Park . 1967 – 72. I remember Keith Denyer being a prefect when I first went (we are still in touch as he went to college with my husband). Linda Stevens was also older than me but we both lived in Essex Street and were good friends. I did go to a couple of reunions and met my old friend Sheila Cobby and her younger brother Robbie and talked Keith Denyer into coming with us. I moved from Brighton just after the big storm I couldn’t always make them. But the last one I attended was with Adrian Perry who lives nearby in sunny Bexhill lol.
I remember Merle, Sherrie Probert-Wood, Angela Vickers, Zena, Linda Hammer and her brother Richard together with Steve Taylor, Terry Taylor, Graham Gunn, David French, Tina Bennett, Joan and Julia Hardwick, Barbara Iggleston (who I see sometimes in Bexhill) as well as a lots of names already mentioned. I think back to all the times we avoided being near the pond in the park at certain times of year lol.

I sometimes have a chat with my granddaughter about my early years and my time at school but things have changed so much she doesn’t always understand about having the ruler over the back of your hand or the boys receiving the cane etc. So long ago now but mainly happy memories.
It seems that Oscar was everybody’s favourite teacher, certainly mine. Sadly he passed away during the first Covid lock down but for him no memorial service, no blue plaque, we don’t even know where his remains are. Has anybody got any ideas? The very best to you all for this Christmas.
So good to hear everyones memories of the old Queens Park Academy of Learning. Looking back myself I wish I wasn’t such an idiot as I spent a lot of time ‘bunking off’. What a wasted opportunity that was but I guess this is the benefit of hindsight and maturing. I remember so many of the names mentioned from my time (1967-1972). I still have my School Report book and look at it with shame, “Could do better” and ‘Must try harder” feature quite strongly. So many names and so many that are no longer with us. Does anyone know what happened to any of these people all 67-71/72,Stephen Lindsay,joined the Army when he left school,Shaun Walters ,use to see occasionally after school ,Raymond Barnard,I know the Pattesons Paul and Trevor went to Australia soon after they left Queens Park but does anyone know where Roger Bowles.I was there 67-72 B Class all the way through House Caburn.
Hi, I attended school 67-70 in Caburn house and remember the Head Mr Tibble, and teachers Hughes, Tomsett, Moody, and Hoare. Pupil names I remember are Zena Matyzac, Janet Preston, Linda Phillips, Merle Blakely, Janice Clarke, Christine Bollingroke, Joy Stoner, Stuart Holland, David Brown, Neil Southon, Richard Bishop, Rodney Chamberlain, Steve Henderson, Terry Smith, Andy Holborn. Another memory was of being caned by Metcalf in my first week at the school for the crime of walking across the upstairs hall instead of around it as I was told. Then saying thank you sir. Does anyone remember running around Queens Park in PE, also cross country which I hated at East Brighton Park and sheepcote, generally in winter with Hughes or Metcalf watching us from the pavilion with binoculars. I preferred the Rugby, cricket and football which was also at East Brighton Park and then there was the yearly inter schools sports day at the Withdene track. I can vaguely remember in my final year one teacher actually recorded a sports day on video, wonder where that ended up?
Hi my name is Alison Bonus I went to Queens Park School from 1965 till 1968 when I left school I worked in the theatre for 4 years as a professional dancer. I then worked for nearly 10 years in the middle east and Europe I have just moved back to England last year as my husband passed away in 2021 .I would like to get in contact with some old friends from school.
