  • Being one who studys photographs in detail, I wonder if we will ever know who the lady is standing in the street in the middle of the picture. She does look rather alone.

  • If you draw a line through the lady and the lampost, behind her was our house that was bombed and we were dug out from. It was up against the blank wall of the first standing house. On the corner coming towards Sussex Street was a garage which vanished altogether. We all got out without a injury.

  • My great grandmother’s house was also in this road and was destroyed in that attack. I have a photo which was published in the local newspaper at the time which shows the aftermath.

  • To Carol-Lynn Rye. I would love to see the photograph (if it can be uploaded on here?) or at least the name of the newspaper and date of publication. My late Dad, Grandparents and Great Grandparents were all living in this road too. Thanks,
    Suzie.

  • Hello Sue ,

I will try to work out how to upload the photo tomorrow as it doesn’t seem obvious ! On the back of the photo it just says “Sussex Daily News!”

  • My ancestors were the Allen’s who lived at 33 John Street, Brighton in the 1800’s, especially 1830 when their son Robert Allen was transported to Australia.
If anyone has any information or photos of that era it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

  • Donna, no photography until the mid 1840s, and then almost certainly not of John street! which was in a poor district, try the James Gray collection of early 20th century images available on this site which should have some of that area.

  • Thank you so much Geoffrey. Being in Australia it’s hard to find things easily about my ancestors there. I’ll take a look.

  • I’ve just moved from John street, Cranbrook flats , happy memories as I moved in with new born son in 2020. While the world was in the craziness. I miss it there.
