Photos across the years

  • My first job when I left Varndean Boys Grammar School back in the Summer of 1959 was as a Junior Clerk (somewhat grand title for an office boy) at the Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation which was located in the building just up from the church in the photograph. The Abbey National Building Society had their offices in the building on the corner if I remember rightly. Haven’t been back to Brighton in many years so imagine things have changed since the photograph was taken? Back in the late ’50s the RAF Recruiting Office was directly opposite and one day, being already fed up with the insurance business and attracted by a window display entreating me to ‘Join the RAF and See The World’ I went in and, as the saying goes – the rest is history.
