Being involved in the community

“I have worked on the estate for seven years since it was redeveloped from the old brewery. The estate has 127 properties, 1 to 4 bedroom houses/flats. We also have 4 disabled units, we were able to design some of these units specifically for the resident’s needs. I work for CDHA and the Hyde Housing Group. My role includes several things. I am in charge of maintenance and cleaning as well as being a contact point for the tenants who live on the estate. I also sit on the management group of the community centre, and attend residents’ meetings. We had a major problem with refuse on the estate. We solved this problem, by getting wheelie bins on the estate. We have a play park; the residents decided on the play equipment they would like. Tenants also have a big input into how the community centre was set up and run. We are involved in the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.

I like living here. There’s a lot for my young children – Sure Start, and after school activities at the Phoenix Community Centre. I help to get events up and running. We had a barbeque for residents at the weekend. Also, just off the estate there are a lot of activities, not just for our children, but for us too
