JB was born in Chelsea in 1889 and brought up in Brighton. The grandson of the then current Lord Chancellor, he studied at Oxford University. After graduating, he went to Columbia to edit a Spanish literary paper where he invested in an emerald mine. During the First World War, he was posted to West Africa to train a Nigerian regiment. When he returned to the UK, he set up a school at 18 Cromwell Road, Hove. His subsequent teaching career took him to Winchester, Kingsmead School in Seaford and Eton. Towards the end of his working life, he travelled to Australia, before coming back to Brighton to write, work as a private tutor, and eventually retire. He died in Brighton in 1971.
