Our photograph here shows the Mayor of Brighton and Hove, Councillor Brian Fitch and the Mayoress Mrs Norah Fitch. They are holding a large representation of the new Royal Mail stamp which is issued on September 18th and features the Helter Skelter on Palace Pier.

The Brighton stamp is one of a set of ten commemorative stamps which feature landmark seaside architecture from around the country. According to Royal Mail: “This ten stamp issue captures the spirit of the seaside experience through the buildings and structures that are exclusive to, or very distinctive of, the UK’s resorts, which were designed for the pleasure of the visitor.”

If you want to find out more about the stamp set and first day covers you can visit the Royal Mail website.

  • Interesting to see that this refers to the Palace Pier. Are they at last reverting back to the ‘real’ name for the pier? It always has and always will be the Palace Pier to me.

Editor’s note: Unfortunately David, you will see if you look closely on the stamp it says ‘Brighton Pier’. But as you say, it will always be Palace Pier as far as we are concerned. Jennifer
