Churchyard revisions

These headstones replaced the original grave-markers which had contravened formal church court procedures.
Roy Pennington

Two new gravestones have been erected recently in St Margaret of Antioch churchyard in Rottingdean to replace those which had been removed in June 2020 .

The Church had covered up the two gravestones (put up in 1962) which had had “deeply offensive” inscriptions. Now the two headstones had been re-inscribed with the same design but with different wording.

G.H. Elliott (1882 – 1962) and Alice Banford (1884 – 1962) were both Music Hall singers but were promoted as minstrels in wording that reflected that style of song and dance.

When a parishoner in 2000 objected to those stones being there, formal church court procedures were invoked and the new stones are now in place.
