Pullman Car Services-Archive

Brighton Belle

Over the last year I have been involved in a project to identify people who worked on Pullman trains, particularly the Brighton Belle, between 1948-1972. Recently on Facebook Brighton Past group there have been a number of postings about the Brighton Belle which always create interest and many comments. A document has been produced listing staff that have been identified so far plus some photographs in their Pullman uniform. If anyone reading this message would like to know if a relative or friend is on the list and has any photos that could be included in the Pullman Car Services-Archive then please email me at nick.lade@btinternet.com

  • Hi Nick.
My dad’s name was Ben Breeds, and he worked on the Brighton Belle on the car ANNE. There are only two names that I can remember who were work friends of my dad, one was Wheatley and the other was Anderton, but I cannot recall their first names. I cannot remember exactly the years that he worked on the Belle, but we moved to Hollingbury in 1956 and I can picture him sitting at our lounge table getting his uniform ready for work in the morning’ and I know that he was there until 1964.
I can remember one day when he came home from work, he was so angry because the menu had been changed and they had taken off the kippers, and they were always the favourite meal every morning for Sir Laurence Olivier. And I can recall something about the stewards going on strike, but then something about the kippers being put back on the menu again. I do know that every time he put on his uniform to go to work, he felt proud to be working on the Brighton Belle.

  • I believe a Leonard Blundell from Coldean used to be a steward on the Brighton Belle.
