Summer 1958 in Albemarle Mansions

What a wonderful year 1958 was. We moved into a flat on the top floor of Albemarle Mansions on Medina Terrace and the summer was heavenly. Continual sunshine and living in such a beautiful Victorian house arranged as flats with an amazing couple living as caretakers in the basement who introduced me to my future husband.

Mr Louis in Preston Street

I was working as a secretary in Brighton and having conversations with Vivienne the photographer and loads of other Brighton celebrities and one day I thought I would go and have my hair done at Mr Louis in Preston Street so I booked in for a full bleach and tint. He did a fabulous job and on my next day at work, there was a look of surprise on my bosses face as I told him I had gone to the dentist.

Comments about this page

  • Hello! Just by chance I have come across this page. I was born in the top floor flat at Albemarle mansions in 1960, where I lived with my parents, my grandmother and brother – and also the ghost of a little girl. My grandmother always said she liked being around all the children who came and went. We stayed for 8 years. Mrs Helmsley lived in the basement. Lovely, kind lady. I remember she would go to bingo and win little china dolls tea sets for me.
