  • I wonder if anybody out there also started going to the Knoll Infant School in April 1941?
Most of us seem to have passed away, but it would interest me if anybody else still also has memories of those war years. I cannot unfortunately say what class I was in, or who our teacher was. From the Senior school, I do remember most names, but only a few from the pupils.

  • Hi Kenneth. You and I have corresponded 2 or 3 times on this site re the Knoll Infants School, Hove, and other topics related to that area over a few years. I guesstimate the last time was about 18 months to 2 years ago.
Like you, I started there in April 1941. I think we established that neither of us remembered each other however, we are clearly close in age. We both remembered David Smart. He was in the first class I joined and has been quite a frequent and interesting contributor to this site from about 2007 to 2010, possibly longer – another guess.
I found this site in about 2015 and made about 2 or 3 contributions about WW2 activities of our “gang” of 6 -8 year olds. We all lived In Wilfrid Road or nearby Bellingham Crescent. This produced no responses so I gave up, assuming that interest in this subject had dried up, or there was nobody of that era still around and using this site. However, I still remember local air raids and bombs dropping, sometimes nearby.
It is good to know that you are still around and hope you are keeping as well as the years will allow.

  • Hello David , pleased to see you are still around. I suppose, at our age, it is a lot to await, that a great deal of response should come about our experiences in WW2. I was very late in finding this site and having now lived most of my life in Germany (the very country our families once fought against), the childhood memories of Hove often need a jerk before they come back to the surface. What I can remember apart from some events at the Knoll school, is being in the 11th Hove cubs and scouts, which were attached to the Bishop Hannington Church, where a Rev., Rees was in charge.Thank you for your comments, all the best,
    Ken.
