Pelham Street Infant School Drill 1909

Pelham Street Infants Drill.
Royal Pavilion & Museums Brighton & Hove
This magic lantern slide shows a class of young schoolchildren standing in rows, taking part in an exercise drill. They are holding small weights. The image was taken at Pelham Street Infants’ school, an annexe of York Place school. Although this slide was probably produced by the Municipal Training College, York Place, for teaching purposes, it suggests current thinking regarding  pupil Welfare.

Times change – not always for the better

Several things struck me about this nostalgic image; firstly that the children were all very well dressed even though this school was not in an affluent area.  Also, unlike a typical class in a modern school, none of the children appear overweight; I do not believe the same could be said of their contemporary counterparts.
