  • Peter R gave the initial details about the class photo, and to add to those details are:
Fifth along the top row is John Cother / white shirt
Seventh in second row is Diana Christmas / long hair
Last on the bottom row looking from viewers left to right is I believe Trevor Cummings.

  • Hi, I have only just found this site and photo, but think I can add a few extra names. Lower girl’s row left to right-Jennifer Andrews-? Jennifer Hudson-Audrey Hyde-?Jennifer Croker-Janet?-Ann Pitkethly-Pamela Smith-?
    Next row–Julie?-Valerie Hobson-Mary?-Brenda Swann-Eileen English-Joan Cannings-Diana Christmas-Maureen Hills
Sylvia Whittington-?-Jaqueline? and Jeanette? Can anyone fill in the missing surnames. I live in North Yorkshire now so would love to hear from anyone out there.  Is that Keith Mason top right and Phillip Elson on the far left? Also Barry Solly in the middle? Please correct me if I am wrong. I remember Michael Barton who only lived around the corner from me and Robin Gander and of course Peter. Regards to all.

  • The lad on the flagbearer’s right looks like my old classmate, Brian Cox.

  • I am in this photo, stood just behind Father John’s right shoulder. I have very fond memories of the Cubs and Father John Knight.   He was a fantastic actor who organised and starred in many Gang shows.

  • I was in a group like this in 1961. I recognise quite a lot of the costumes. I was an angel in the back row with one of thise silver cardboard halos. The top year of St Nicholas Junior gave two performances of the nativity play – one in St Nicholas church and the other in the hut-like Church of the Good Shepherd in Mile Oak. I have my photo somewhere. When I track it down I’ll upload it.

  • What I like about this simple b/w photo is how it seems to capture the innocence of the age. More importantly it gives a tantalising view of rural Mile Oak as it was back in the 50s and 60s when I was growing up. In the background you can make out the bungalows this side of Stanley Avenue – and also the trees – esp the 9 poplars which were down near the Chalky road end – when Chalky road really WAS chalky. Looking at it sends shivers down my back actually. I may even have been playing in Chalky road as this picture was taken, although I was probably at school (never wagged it). I only lived at the top of this road… Paul Edwards

  • Have just found this site of the school photos. I am in the second row no 11 of girls on the right hand side looking at the photo. Thank you Bonny for putting it on. I have been living in Australia now for many years on a small farm in the central west. By Pat Finneran (Morley 31.1.2010)

  • Have just found this page. I guess I’m getting nostalgic for my roots after having lived in Sweden since the sixties. But, yes, Sylvia, that must be me at centre of back row. It’s certainly Michael Barton and also Jennifer Andrews. I think Keith Mason is top left. Stockholm, 23-09-2012.

  • So many memories of St Nicholas school. How luck am I to have met up with Sylvia Whittington. We are now happily married and live in Eastbourne. Would love to hear from any of our old school friends.

  • I believe that I was one of those girls that was dancing – on the right hand side of the picture.  I left left school in 1952 aged 15 1/2 so that would date that picture around 1951.

  • I have just read all the comments on this page, many of you mentioned photos that my brother was in. I know many of you by name from Mile Oak Revisited, and you being in school and the scouts with John. I should have posted last year. My darling brother John Cother passed away May of 2020 after a short but vicious battle with cancer. I was lucky enough to get to the UK December 2019 and meet up with our sister who now lives in Shoreham. We went to Eastleigh for a weekend and spent quality time with John. Trevor Cummings popped in with his lovely wife. Time does not erase the pain of losing a loved one. I miss my big brother every day.
