The Anglican Church of St John the Evangelist was built in Carlton Hill, for Reverend Henry Wagner by George Cheesman in Doric style. Seating up to 1200 people, the church closed in 1980.
After plans to convert it into a detoxification centre were rejected at a public inquiry, this listed building was taken over by the Greek Orthodox community as a church in March 1986.

St John’s Carlton Hill was the ‘twin church’ for Brighton College Chapel. After the Harvest Festival service each year, boys used to be sent out to houses in the parish with boxes of food for pensioners.
My cousin, Albert Newington, was a choirboy at this church, what a lot of leg pulling he got for it. But he did have a nice voice. We both went to St Johns School down the road, at least we did in between bunking off for the day. After that we went up to Queens Park School where we did the same until we got caught by Mr Metcalfe one of the teachers, the devil himself. Ahh … what memories.
I was married in this church on December 3rd 1960, to David Henry Blackman, I was eighteen years old,so this year we will be celebrating our 50th Anniversary.
I was in the choir in the late 50’s, not because I had a good voice but because I was altar boy. I was christened at St John’s in 1951. I also attended St John’s Infants & Junior. Once a week the whole school would have assembly in the church, that was when I would carry out my altar boy duties. When my mum passed away in 1972 the service was held at St John’s, consequently this church holds a great deal of memories.
I attended St John’s Infant/Primary between 1944 and 1949. My first experience of treading the boards was as King Herod in the Nativity play of 1948 at the church. I also sang in the choir. Did any of you go with the church group to Sandy Balls in the New Forest or to camp in Horsted Keynes during the late 40s/early 50s?
St Johns church is not in Albion Hill,,it is in Carlton Hill.
I sang in the choir with my brother Robert from about 1954/1959. There was a ladies choir, a family named Stone were also in the choir mother father and their daughter.
The priest at that time was a man called Gimlet, I think.
David, the intro for this image states that it is in Carlton Hill, not Albion Hill, that is referring to the wider district.
One of my sisters Terri Spencer got married here to Terry Spencer,related to the Catt family from Firle road,it was 1961.
