The inscription reads “To the glory of God, and in memory of Ruth Major, who worshipped in this church, and died May 3rd 1936. Also in memory of Alderman Richard Major, husband of Ruth, Churchwarden of this parish for 20 years, Died 6th December 1948.”

Richard Major was mayor of Brighton in 1926, he was a Master Butcher and married Ruth Page in 1888. They had two children.

  • I found this interesting as I have learnt that Richard Major lived in my house from 1931 – 1935. There is a large cupboard on the landing which we were told had been built to house his mayoral robes and we always referred to it as the Mayor’s cupboard. However on learning that he was mayor in 1926 or 1927 this does not appear to be the case.
