May Day Blossom 2010

Can you identify this tree?

We’ve had to wait longer this year for the trees to come into leaf and the blossom to appear. But now green leaves and pink blossom are there in abundance and this is perhaps the most beautiful time of the year in the Rest Garden. Do come and take a look … and if anybody can identify the species of the big tree in the picture, that would be brilliant.

The burial vaults

Incidentally, in the background of the first photo you can see the facade of the burial vaults designed in 1840 by Amon Henry Wilds. For many years this Grade II listed construction has been hidden away behind heavy overgrowths of ivy and euonymus. Pruning and clearance work by SNGSA, the St Nicholas Green Spaces Association, and other volunteer groups including the Portslade Green Gym have brought AH Wilds’ handsome facade back into the light of day.
