The Mummy and my yo-yo ambitions

A visit from The Mummy

I lived in a sweet shop close to the cinema, therefore spent most Saturday mornings there. I can remember watching someone dressed as The Mummy wandering about in the foyer to advertise a Rank horror film of, no doubt, the same name. I yearned to be a monitor at the kids show and be given a free pass and most importantly – a huge badge. When I eventually became a Monitor I was in seventh heaven…oh the power.

My yo-yo ambitions

My most disappointing moment was for weeks taking part in a weekly yo-yo competition sponsored by Lumar Yo-yos. I considered myself quite an expert and won one of the weekly rounds. The adult running the competition was Steve Stevens who I believe was an American and was an employee of Lumar Yo-yos. When the final competition arrived, Steve Stevens bought in a ‘ringer’ who had been absent from the previous rounds. He walked away with a very handsome white cricket jumper with a professional looking yo-yo champion badge on the front.

A jumper to forget

I was shattered at losing. My mother, who incidentally outwitted an armed robbery at our sweetshop – but that’s another story, knitted me a yellow jumper with Yo-yo Champion in red letters displayed on the front. Both my brothers, now in their sixties, still mention the yellow jumper I wore. Strangely enough, I have tried to forget.
