Photographed in the early 1950s

I attach a couple of recently discovered photographs of my late wife, Judith, nee Spaven, on a pony at Brighton Zoo (Withdean Zoo) and petting a goat there.

She looks about 3 or 4 at the time, and was born in Feb 1947, so the photos are probably summer 1951 or 1952. In the picture with the pony one can clearly see what is now the pub/restaurant. I hope these photographs trigger some more memories.

  • I remember going to this zoo when I was a child, and that’s the pub we go to now when we visit Brighton.

  • I remember the zoo very well. I lived in Preston Village and the wood behind the zoo. My friends and I called it Cherry Wood. We built a tree house and one under a tree, we named the main path comanche trail and the smaller one cherokee trail. Happy days!
