A visit in the 1950s

These photographs were taken on a visit to Withdean Zoo in the early 1950s I think.

  • I remember being taken to Withdean Zoo with my parents. There was a very scruffy Bison in residence. My father was always amused by this, as he was Canadian and had seen better. It was a very poor specimen indeed. We lived in Springfield Road, so were in easy walking distance and this must have been back in the late 1940’s.

  • Yes, I visited the Zoo in the late 40’s. I remember that there were a lot of monkeys. David.

  • I remember the monkey house when the zoo was at Withdean. They were housed in the single storey building in the car park. This building is now regularly used for the Speed Awareness courses run by the Police for people who have driven over the speed limit and been caught.

  • My mother Joy Morton worked in the Zoo from 1948 TO 1951, she loved working with the animals, the Zoo was opened by Jean Simmons the movie actress, I have a photo of her visit, if you would want any photos I am only too happy to share. Kind Regards, Penny Moody.
