Hodshrove Farm

Hodshrove Farm family Wedding
From a private collection

My Grandfather,  Harry Joseph Charles Bates b1865  was a Market Gardener and Publican of The Ship on the Lewes Road. The Market Gardener was behind The Ship in the early 1900. He then moved and took over Hodshrove Farm and also moved his Market garden business to the opposite side of the road, which is now called Bates Estate and part of Wild Park.
Renie you are right about more than one Harry Joseph Charles Bates. My Grandfather’s first son was also called Harry Joseph Charles Bates b1895 and his first son, so three generations.

Grandfather retired in 1933

My Grandfather gave up Hodshrove in 1933 and retired to Burgess Hill, he died in 1956.
His first son Harry did live at Hodshrove in one of his father’s cottages and later at 1 The Highways. He was also a Market Gardener and carried on with Market Gardener Business which had three outlets a barn on the Lewes Road, the old fruit and veg market, and a grand shop No 1 Bartholomew opposite the old Town Hall, with his brother William until his death in 1949. William carried on with the shop in Bartholomew which was inherited by his daughters from Harry senior in 1956.
