Relaxing on the helter-skelter

View from the top of the helter skelter

“This is probably one of the best views of Brighton in Brighton. It’s from the top of the helter-skelter on the Palace Pier. It was a great place to relax in between Punch and Judy shows, away from all the hustle and bustle, and it’s the best place to see the Red Arrows air display team when they visit Brighton. But they come very close – it can be scary.”

  • My dad, Oscar Wakefield, used to work on the pier. He was one of the people who built the helter skelter. I believe it came from a fairground in Wales.

  • I worked on the Helter Skelter for one summer, I think it was1959. I was at the top holding the mats while people sat on them. Every morning we used to have to climb up the slide rubbing on bees wax to make it more slippery.
