Notes and queries - where was it?

Query from Rita Denman

“I was born in Lynton Street close by, in 1929 and lived there until my marriage in 1953. I am very interested in local history and family history, which I find it difficult to separate. I keep many records and bits of information about both. I knew nothing about the Hanover Mill until I read Tim Carder’s Encyclopaedia of Brighton. I have been fascinated by the prints of Brighton showing the many mills in the area. All I know about Hanover Mill is what is contained in the encyclopaedia. Are there any more specific prints? Is anything else known? Millers etc?”

Trying to look into this.

‘The Hanover Mill, a tall post-mill erected in about 1838 but demolished in the late 1890s, stood on a site approximating to 39 Bernard Road.’

There’s a very fuzzy picture of the windmill at the front of a book called ‘Hilly Laine to Hanover’. It stands surrounded by market gardens, and the authors say it existed from 1813-1887.

  • I have lived in Bernard Road for 28 years and was really surprised to see the windmill on a map at Brighton Museum. To me it looked more like it was placed on the corner of Bernard Road and Place – maybe this is why it is very flat there.

  • I know where number 39 is. But I do wonder if maybe it was where the old factory was which led through to Brading Road with another factory building? Strange place to put a factory building like this and wonder if it was because it was built on the old footings of the mill as all the other buildings in the street are houses?
