Working for Brighton Council

These are some photographs I took during my time working for Brighton Council. They would have been taken between 1981 and 1993. In 1981 I was employed by the Parks and Recreation Dept. as Senior Plant Officer; that is plant as in equipment, not as in horticulture. Over the years my job evolved with an increase of responsibility to Technical Services Manager.

Changing responsibilities

When the Parks Department merged with Tourism and the Leisure Services were put out to public tender I was involved in, whilst continuing with my existing job, the writing up of specifications for the technical operation of the leisure services. My job title then changed to Facilities Officer as the contracts were put out to tender.

  • This brings back memories of sunny days in the 50s and 60s! Mum would make egg sandwiches and then it would be down to the paddling pool for the day, eating our sarnies while sitting on the wall. Anyone else remember wearing knitted bathing costumes?

  • This brought back some memories! I was a lifeguard for a season at Rottingdean pool and it was great fun, especially in a gale when waves broke against the sea wall and landed in the pool – lucky it was saltwater.
St Luke’s also holds memories. I worked there prior to its transfer to Brighton Council. I was the last supervisor, head lifeguard, coach and engineer – truly a jack-of-all-trades.
Withdean and the memory of the school sports racing for the Downs School in 1968!
    Great pictures. Well done Bill!

  • The Withdean sports arena was the annual venue for the July sports day of Preston College during the 1950s, the latter being a boarding school situated in nearby Preston Road. I remember the events I won, and conveniently forget the ones I lost.

  • I remember the horrible knitted swimming trunks I wore when at the paddling pool in the 50s, great days though.
