I was prompted to post this photograph by a chance finding of Nick Lade’s upload of the 1966 photo.

I was a pupil from 1961 until 1968.

  • Thanks for posting Sean and hope you are keeping well. I was unfortunately absent when this photograph was taken and must say it is amazing after all these years not only how many of the faces I recognise but the names as well.

  • Hi Nick. It would be very interesting to ‘call the register’ on this 1962 group, who would now be in their mid-60s to early 70s.

  • Yes, nice photo Sean. I have my own rolled-up copy at home too, along with the one taken when we were in the sixth form. When I clicked on the above to enlarge it, there I was, one of six boys sitting in the front row, flanked by Richard Hebberd on one side and Charles Harrison on the other. Regards, Alan.

  • I am almost certain that my late brother Raymond Skinner, is in the back row, 5th from the right. Lovely quality photo.

    By Carole Skinner (21/08/2014)
  • I have emailed Sean a number of our fellow pupils to see how many of the first form front row we can identify. I will hopefully be able to publish a final list and assume you know some names so please send them to my email nick.lade@btinternet.com

  • Alan, thank you for reminding me of Richard’s name. Was there a photo when we were in the 6th form? Or are you thinking of 1966 – the one Nick has already posted?

    By Sean Murphy (24/08/2014)
  • Hi Nick, Sean and Alan, I have the 1962 appropriately outside the bathroom. I will try to identify personages. Regards from sunny Scotland.

    By Tony Hagon (24/08/2014)
  • I’m sitting cross legged on the front row directly below dim Jim. To my left is Neil Langley, to his left Howard Fletcher, and continuing in the same direction (i.e. to the right of the photo) Nicky Eleanor, Chris Irving, John Small and John Spencer. Apologies to the next guy whose name I have forgotten, but after him Alan Lee, Jon Lloyd, Ian Stuart, , Sean, , (was it Pete..) Allebone, , “Jack” Benny, Pete Ansell,, Pete Munro…. 5 apols and then Ian Saunders, then I’m struggling with names.
From the extreme left of the photo, front row,you have Jim (Norman) Wright, Lamb, , Rob Smith, , Tim(?) Healey, Pete Acton, Mitchell, Jon Gould, , Tim Norton, Martin Davidson, Andrew Sloggett, John King, Tim Beresford, Tony Cartwright, Paul Wilson, Arthur Wing, Darryl Hughes, Barraclough, Tony Gillott, Hebburn (spelling?), Alan H, Charles Harrison, then 2 apols.

I’m really embarrassed not to be able to remember so many but I thought I’d get all those I could remember on this note to jog others’ memories and fill in the gaps. As soon as you say their names, I’ll remember them and be annoyed that my memory let me down!

    By Tony Hagon (24/08/2014)
  • …oops… I didn’t see Nick’s comment until after I had posted this list. I’ve now received his spreadsheet and realised that I got a lot of the names wrong anyway! Anyway, I’ve added names to some of the gaps. I’m 64 now and the sixth forms boys in the photo STILL look old to me! Regards, Tony Hagon

    By Tony Hagon (24/08/2014)
  • For info we have so far identified 66 of the 77 pupils and Tony has received an updated spreadsheet from me which clarifies a couple of his suggestions such as Adrian Acton, not Pete. I do not intend to print all the names on this site but if anyone would like a copy of the first formers’ names and maybe identify the remaining 10 pupils then please email me at nick.lade@btinternet.com

  • Hi Sean. I have a photo of our Sixth Geography class, with Messrs McLean, Hall and Nash also in the frame. I’m sure I also have the 1966 full school photo somewhere in the house, but I also have one taken in 1931. When Peter Archer and I made a pre-start tour of the school in 1961, we were walking along the corridor behind the south end of the school hall (the one that led to the prefects’ room). Peter was looking at the many school photos on the wall, and called me back to show me a pupil with a huge grin on his face in one of them. When I looked at the boy, I nearly fell over. Although he didn’t know it at the time, out of all the photos and all the boys he could have chosen, he was pointing straight at my own father! That 1931 photo was found among my late father’s possessions in his bungalow in Withdean after he died in 2009, and I now have it here at my house in Hove. Regards, Alan.

  • Nick sent me this photo. Yes I remember the faces but can’t put names to many of them, so thanks to Tony for doing so. I am in the front row sitting next to John Smith (?). Living in Canada for over 40 years now but seeing these faces seems like yesterday. All the best to you all.

    By Peter Munro (28/08/2014)
  • That was a week of pure nostalgia and kudos to Nick! Alan – fun 1968 photo – I wonder if this was done for all upper 6th classes? (though I had pretty much checked out by May. Peter – good to find you in Canada. I’ve been south of you for 25 years – if ever in Seattle, come and visit (seanm6@uw.edu)

  • Just to update everyone, today we finally identified all 77 names of the first formers in the front row plus an additional one sitting on the far right in the second row! Anyone who would like to receive a copy of the list can email me at nick.lade@btinternet.com

  • My uncle, John Brian Cother was given a free scholarship to attend this school in 1927-1933. He was noted as a great singer, performing in various operas with Sir John E Reed. I have several photos. I have been in contact with Mark Gillingham re any information available form the old school magazine.  I will be most interested in any information of my uncle (killed WWII) school days, photos, etc, contact aussigal1@yahoo.com.

  • Great to see this photo again. I have a rolled up copy like several other posters and would love to get a copy of the scan. Sean, I live in Richmond BC and would love to hear from you paulg7083@yahoo.com and perhaps get a copy of the scan. Peter Munro and I met up in Vancouver in the ’70s and got together regularly for many years – we still exchange Christmas letters. At the time of the photo I was at the end of the 4th year so would like try identifying some my classmates and teachers -anyone know how we could publish a list? Nick Lade, can you send me the list you have of the front row?

  • Wow, Nick Lade, I was born at the maternity hospital in 1956, my maiden name was Lade with my grandfather being Laurie Lade. I don’t imagine we’re related but seeing as my fathers mother had a few partners I’m curious if Lade is just a common name to the area or if somewhere there’s a link.

    By Suzanne Crouch (30/04/2020)
  • Hi Suzanne, well we are related! Not close relations but we are 5th cousins. Lade is not a particularly common surname but does have quite a few connections in Sussex. It so happens that one of my hobbies is genealogy. If you would like to know more about our family tree then email me at nick.lade@btinternet.com
