Football Team 1948/9

Where we played

For our home games, which we played on Wednesday afternoons, we caught a bus from Preston Road to Patcham, then walked to Braypool sports ground. Our inter-house matches we played on Saturday mornings at Patcham Place recreation ground.

Regular matches

One of our regular matches was against Aryeh House School, which was a boarding school for Jewish boys, situated on the corner of The Upper Drive and Dyke Road.  I think the school was sold for redevelpment in the late 50s early 60s. I also remember playing against a Hove school whose football ground was at the top of the hill, on the Dyke Road junction with the A27.  I think we had a match every Wednesday; we also played some of the larger council school who beat us heavily 12 – 1 or so.

Most enjoyable school years

Major Bastock must have had a very good relationship with Aryeh House, as I do recall playing for the Old Boys V School match at the Aryeh House ground (not full size) which was in front of Aryeh House, along Dyke Road side of the property. Preston College had it’s problems, but for me they were my most enjoyable school years. I would love to hear from any of my school mates, please contact me on Facebook.
