George Osborne: 50-52 East Street

50-52 East Street

Established in the 19th century

The first photograph shows George Osborne’s shop at 50/52, East Street, 27 November 1966. This old shirtmakers business was started here by Andrew Searle, and taken over by George Osborne during the 1880s. For the next 80 years it had the reputation of being the best gentleman’s shop in Brighton with made to measure shirts its speciality. For older men it was a sad moment when it closed in 1966.

Do you remember?

  • We have a Tess Top Hat that was sold by Geo Osborne of Brighton – we think in June 1934.

  • This business belonged to the Irving family, I don’t know the date it was taken over but it was there during the war and old Mrs Irving ran it whilst my Uncle Gil was away in the army.
I recall her living upstairs when we visited my Aunts and Uncles who all lived in the town, as a small child 3-4 I can still see in my minds eye the barbed wire barricades on the beach, just down the road.
