My grandfather
The photograph here is of No 52 & 53 Gloucester Road Brighton and shows my grandfather George Robert Powell, who was a provision merchant, standing on the right .
Trading from 1885-1905
The store was owned by George Washington Ashdown as a poulter and pork butcher from 1885 to 1905 and after that date was taken over by Southern Counties Daries. George Washington Ashdown was my grandfather’s brother-in-law, as he was married to Rosina Powell.

Wow, they must have worked so hard, setting all that up everyday. What a show.
Wow, what an astonishing display. Of course that was all way before the introduction of refrigerated storage for meat and poultry, and the ‘elf and safety’ that came along with it. Mind you, if you travel in certain Middle Eastern countries today you can still see similar butcher’s shop layouts. It’s also possible that the display as photographed was done specially for the picture and that the normal daily layout was somewhat less comprehensive.
