Very short road
Inverness Road is probably one of Brighton’s shortest roads, running between Upper Lewes Road and the main Lewes Road. There have been residential houses there since 1865 and it has hardly changed, except for the amount of cars that are now parked up and down the street. I lived at the top of the road with my parents in Upper Lewes Road from 1971 to 1976, and it was my main route in the mornings to Lewes Road. I used to get the number 13 bus to school until I was 16 in 1973.
Did you live in Inverness Road or go to Harold Burnard’s shop?
Boot repair shop
At the top on the left corner was a ‘Boot Repair’ shop run by Harold Burnard. He became a good friend of the family and we always took our shoes to him and he was a very popular character. It was listed as a ‘Boot Repair’ company in 1885 and had a long history of proprietors until Harold took over in the late 1940s.
