The viaduct

The London Road viaduct was built of stone and brick in 1846 as part of the Brighton to Lewes line, and links London Road and Brighton stations. It took only 10 months, but 10 million bricks to construct it!

The viaduct is 400 yards long and reaches 67 feet high in the middle, where it crosses London Road. Because of its strong curve, the outer northern edge is 45 feet longer than the southern edge.

It consists of one central, elliptical arch, 50 feet in span, and 26 semi-circular arches, 30 feet in span.

  • Very interesting, although the viaduct does not cross London Road at any point. It passes over Beaconsfield Road (above my head) and then Preston Road.
