Patchings Builders Yard: dates from 19th century

Patchings Builders Yard, Portland Street

Patchings the Builders’ old yard, Portland Street, most likely dates from the 19th Century. The brick and wood building seen in the foreground was used as a wood store and supplied the needs of the Tunbridge Wells manufacturers on Gloucester Road and met the need of the other wood-working trades within the town. The workshops in the background have north light and this suggests they were purpose built for one or other of the cabinet makers. Such yards are fast disappearing!

  • I used to be a joiner in the mentioned workshop and became foreman for a few years. I started my apprenticeship in 1975 and left to go self employed in 1987.

  • Shame it’s been 20 years and it’s still vacant. Well done the council.
