Originally the Railway Hotel

The Nightingale Theatre, on the corner of Guildford Road and Surrey Street, (almost the first building you see as you exit Brighton station) started life as the Railway Hotel in the 1880s.

It is typical of the gaudy style of hotel which opened in Brighton during the late nineteenth century to serve the needs of pleasure seeking London day trippers. Another is the Queen’s Head in Queen’s Road with its mid-nineteenth century facade which was restored in 1988.

Naturally, shops and public houses also opened and by 1860 there were 479 outlets for beer!

  • Is this The Prince Albert pub at the top of Trafalgar Street which, I would guess is also Victorian.
