Francois Bonnot

by Sarah Bonnot 9 March 2013

Hi, for many years I have been trying to trace Francois Bonnot and can get no further, I am hoping someone can help. The facts I have are: He lived in Brighton as confirmed by the birth/death certificates of his children: pre 1911 were: Crown Street (1909), Cannon Street (1910). Was working as a ‘hotel waiter’ and ‘pantyman at hotel’.

He was born in 1885/1886 in France (confirmed on 1911 census) but no area given. Can find no UK register of birth. 1911 census stated had been married 2 years so marriage to Frances Mary Hyland of Sedlescombe, Sussex approx 1908/1909 but can find no trace. Further children born/died 1912/13/14, still in Brighton (Boston St, Albion St), but no other documentary evidence or certificates found. Curiously listed his surname as ‘Martin’ on the 1911 Census but definitely same person/family as all other details check out perfectly. Can find no UK register of death.

Have checked ship manifests etc re his arrival and possible departure but no luck. Family rumour that he may have been an ‘Onion Johnnie’.

Any tips greatly appreciated, thank you
