28 milbury road hove by peter grey 24 August 2009It would seem there is no information regarding this address and its occupants and therefore this enquiry is closed.22 replies Re: 28 milbury road hove by Tim Sargeant 24 August 2009It is unlikely that even the daughter is still about as she was born 1918. You could try The Evening Argus for the coroner’s report. The premises seem to be a medical practice now. TCS. Re: 28 milbury road hove by peter grey 25 August 2009TCS Many thanks for your message. I have tghe coroners report but was interested in the house and the occupants and wshether or not it was used as a Canadian Billett. Peter Re: 28 milbury road hove by Isabel 25 August 2009Peter,the Evening Argus would have reported this incident which should give you some answers. Not sure where the canadians were billeted I remember them around but was only 3 in 1942 and never heard anyone refer to this incident in later years. Are you able to research the Argus archives yourself? It is wilbury road? Re: 28 milbury road hove by peter grey 25 August 2009Isabel, Many thanks. I have the Coroner’s report which says that the canadian soldier was “in the habit” of visitng Mrs Bannerman and her daughter, whom he met at a Red Cross Dance. I am reluctant to engage with the Argus for fear of this becoming “newsworthy”. I thought there might be a “Milbury Road” historical society, or some such local group that had an interest in the area during thw war, especially so since there were then so many canadian around a long way from home. This incident was as a consequence of the firing of a sidearm by the soldier in question, wounded and from which wounds he died some days later in Hove General. It was not permitted to carry firearms when off duty and it is the reason for his being in unlawful possession of the weapon that is so intriguing. Thank you for your courtesy and help. Peter Re: 28 milbury road hove by Tim Sargeant 25 August 2009I suspect that you can see the Argus on microfiche at the Brighton History Centre or one of the Sussex archives without alerting the paper about your researches. I have always found them most helpful. Do you know the name of this unfortunate soldier? TCS. Re: 28 milbury road hove by peter grey 25 August 2009Tim, Many thanks. I have, after all, emailed the ARgus asking for copies of any items resulting from the coroner’s inquest. I live in cornwall so a visit to Brighton, although desireable in many ways, is not really on. There may be more so keep a watch. Many thanks peter Re: 28 milbury road hove by Isabel 25 August 2009Tim, if you are not satisfied with Argus E Mail Ican go to the History Centre and check up on all reporting of this case. Please note it`s Wilbury not Milbury road. good luck. Re: 28 milbury road hove by Tim Sargeant 25 August 2009Isabel; It was Peter’s enquiry not mine. Thanks for the kind offer though, I’m sure he will be pleased as it’s a bit of a trek from Cornwall. Regards, TCS. Re: 28 milbury road hove by Isabel 25 August 2009Sorry Tim,senior moment(nothing new there)Thanks for pointing it out! Re: 28 wilbury road hove by peter grey 26 August 2009Isabel and TCS, Many thanks for all your help and your courtesy. I think there is not anything that I can discover other than the coroner’s report and what you have added. This is an sbsolutely splendid site, I had n o idea this kind of interactive facility was “out there”! With another topic, not so distant in time, it would have probably resolved all my questions. If the Argus report, should there be one, exposes anything more I’ll gladly contact you again via this medium. Thank you once again, and if you should be in touch with whoever set this thing up please give her/him my congratulations. Re: 28 wilbury road hove by peter grey 26 August 2009Isabel and TCS, Coincidentally, this morning from Ottawa, I received the army record of the enquiry into this soldiers death. It shows that the fellow was in improper possession of a sidearm having been ordered by his RSM to return the weapon to the armoury before leaving for leave and that he was negligent in his handling of that weapon during his stay at 28 Wilbury Road. It was a tragedy, amongst a plethora of tragedies, and that is an end to that. Once again, thank you for your kind interest and help, it has been a pleasure to correspond with you. Re: 28 wilbury road hove by Isabel 26 August 2009Peter, How ironic that that should happen many miles from home, in the middle of a war, shot with his own gun.As you say a real tragedy. Re: 28 milbury road hove by Tim Sargeant 27 August 2009Give our regards to Cornwall Peter; We haven’t made it down there this year to Atlantic Reach near Newquay, where our son-in-laws family have a little holiday place. I was disappointed to see on our last visit that the motor museum Automobilia at St Stephen had closed down. TCS. Re: 28 milbury road hove by Isabel 27 August 2009Thanks Tim, Thats what we woke up to every morning. We have gone off thread but Peter you are lucky to live in such a lovely county (Not as good as Sussex though) Re: 28 milbury road hove by peter grey 27 August 2009Isabel Aha! Much rather live in Sussex. Good beer from there and the people are “more diverse”. Re: 28 milbury road hove by Tim Sargeant 27 August 2009There is a firm not too far from here called ‘East West Ales’. They take beers from this part of the country, Kent & Sussex, down to the West Country Devon Cornwall etc and return with some of your local beers. So you should be able to get a pint or two of Harveys Lewes Ales or similar somewhere down your way! TCS. Re: 28 milbury road hove by peter gey 28 August 2009TCS. Harveys, a brewery to conjur with! I used to print and publish the local CAMRA magazine up your way, Tonbridge etc and ofgten spent a happy bhour, or three, drinking what I believe is the nicest beer every, Harveys!!! Never seen it down here. GTheir Mild weas WONDERFUL, can you still get it? Told you Sussex swas a sjuper place. peter Re: 28 milbury road hove by peter grey 28 August 2009Isabel, Forgive my rudeness, I did not intend ant “sexist” exclusion of you concerning the Wonderful Harvey’s Brewery! I am so used to my wife turning her nose up at BEER that it failed to cross my mind that you too may be a Harveys, or any other brewery, fan. Re: 28 milbury road hove by Isabel 28 August 2009Kelly`s ice cream you can`t beat it Peter. Re: 28 milbury road hove by peter grey 30 August 2009Aha! Yeeeeesssss…………..
