'LONDON BY THE SEA by jANE 29 January 2004HOW LONG AGO HAS BRIGHTON BEEN COMPARED TO LONDON AND, HOW OLD IS THE SAYING’LONDON BY THE SEA’2 replies Re: 'LONDON BY THE SEA by Martin Nimmo 30 January 2004I guess the name has been applied ever since the Prince Regent first held court in Brighton in about 1810. There was certainly a book by that name (by Harold Clunn, I think) published about 1950, but the name was current long before that. Re: 'LONDON BY THE SEA by J Waters 7 March 2004The term London by the sea may have began after Brighton was linked to London by the railways in september 1841. The first excursion trains ran in easter 1844 carrying hundrends of day trippers from London, at its height in 1862 130000 visits descended on whit monday, after that Brighton passed from being a select watering hole to a side town enjoyed by the everyone & because day trippers could pop down for a short visit it must have felt like being close to home.
