Abergavenny Public House by Ted Brooke 7 March 2005I am interested in any information regarding the pub. It was situated at the south-east side of Rifle Butt Road, and stood on the cliff top.2 replies Re: Abergavenny Public House by Andy Grant 8 March 2005Ted, A few years back I had a query from a participant on the Sussex Plus list about one of his ancestors, who was a landlord at the Abergavenny Arms. If you give me an email address I can attempt to put you in contact. Anyway, the Abergavenny Arms was constucted sometime in the mid to late 1820’s and was first listed in a directory of 1828 (see below). The pub and the Cliff Creamery were demolished in 1935 due to the constant erosion of the cliff face threatening to undermine them. The cliff wall was built shortly afterwards. He is listed there in both 1861 and 71 censuses. He was Chinese (or part Chinese). When he died in 1876 his death in the newspaper was recorded as “Death of a Chinaman”. It was reported that the locals referred to him as Chin Chin. Add your replyHiddenAdd your title Add your wordsWould you like to add some images (optional)?
