It was a traumatic time for you at the time as I do remember your poor brother. I think his name was Anthony. Did you know there is a reunion later this year in Hove. I may go…not to sure as the time at that school was not to memorable.Kind regards, Alan Re: Aryeh House School by Matt Spaven 3 April 2008Hi,Can you tell me any more information on your family? I’m trying to trace my gran’s roots, and she shared the same maiden surname with you, Redman. She was Edith (Mary) Redman nee Smith (1909-2003), one of 9 children, two of whom were Florence and Irene, One may have been Elizabeth and possibly her mother’s name was Mary.Regards, Matt Re: Aryeh House School by Paul Maltby 20 November 2008Hi, I now live in the USA but I was a pupil at Aryeh House from around September 1959 to April 1960. However, it was only today, after Googling “Jewish boarding school” + Hove, that I learned the name of the place. Frankly, my life there was miserable. Still, I was wondering if you happened to know anyone who attended the school during my time there. Reply to: pmaltby@wcupa.edu Paul Maltby Re: Aryeh House School by Albert Farshi 26 April 2020 8:41 AMI was there from 1957 at the age of 10 till 1960 and it was first time not living with my parents and quite frankly loved it all except the Kippers for dinner that I would excuse myself from the table and flush down the toilet. Ha…. It was interesting back in the day. I was at the time from New York and the only Yank in King’s Arthur’s Court. Anyway, my name is Albert Farshi and I live in Los Angeles now.. Anyone remember me???? Re: Aryeh House School by Eskandar Nahaie 13 June 2020 6:38 PMYes, I was there between 1955 to 1957. I need to contact any school mates at that time please contact me at enahaie@yahoo.co. Thanks. Re: Aryeh House School by Eskandar Nahaie 13 June 2020 6:39 PMMy name is Eskandar Nahaie, but then was known as Eskandar Nakhi Moussa from Iran. I had most miserable time from 1955 till 1957. Thanks Re: Aryeh House School by Drake Stephen 19 May 2021 9:01 PMHiI believe my older brother Michael David Drake went to the school from aged 3 in 1955 to 1960 when he was 8. Michael passed away this year from brain cancer sadly. Does anyone remember him? stephenpdrake@icloud.com. Trying to piece things together?! Thanks Re: Aryeh House School by Michael Zysblat 7 June 2022 10:44 AMI went to Aryeh House in the summer of 1951 aged 4 with my cousin Shimmy as a holiday camp. Shimmy lasted the day of arrival as he cried so much his parents had to take him home. I was made of sturdier stuff and lasted a week before catching chickenpox and having to go home. My only memory otherwise is going to Littlehampton and eating some sort of meat sandwiches on the beach. If anyone has any photos of that time, it would be greatly appreciated. Re: Aryeh House School by Nicholas Taylor 15 June 2022 3:25 PMFor information, there is another thread with the same name, where Pat (Patricia?) writes: “Pike’s Blue Book gives a preparatory school with G S A Eliassoff as Principal at 25 Sussex Square. It does not name it as Aryeh House, but it obviously was as it later moved to Upper Drive, Hove, where I remember it in the 1950s. I believe it was a Jewish preparatory boarding and day school, and understand that some of the pupils came from overseas. Kelly’s for 1958 shows it as the Upper Drive address with S G Eliassoff as Principal. I suppose it must have closed in the 1960s or 70s. Certainly not there now as the building has gone, replaced by a housing development. It was well set back on the north corner of Upper Drive and Dyke Road, with its own grounds surrounding, if I remember it rightly.” I did not attend the school, but lived on the street at the bottom end of its grounds which I remember as a field of rough grass. The school was visible as a grey cube, a strange alien-looking and apparently not very large building. I never saw activity around it until one day I had strayed into the field through a hole in our fence, as I did occasionally. Suddenly an army of boys exploded out of the building and ran in all directions. I must have been about 6, so this would be around 1956. As the boys were older I was intimidated. As I crouched in the grass one or two came near and might have said I should not be there, but that was the only contact I ever had. Some years later, after 1960, the school closed and was demolished as described above. Before the area was cleared for building, I found the field strewn with literally dozens of flexible crook-handle canes, which the owners presumably did not feel the need to dispose of safely in those days (imagine the PC fuss now!). At my own school, the headmaster needed only two. I am still intrigued, and wonder what life was like in the school. Re: Aryeh House School by Stephen Drake 18 June 2022 7:04 PMI wonder if you remember my brother Michael Drake who was born in 1952 and I believe went to that school? Re: Aryeh House School by Peter Kutcher 3 July 2022 9:47 PMI remember 2 names Alan Bright and Maxie Belson .Iwas there from1953-1954/5. I was 6yrs at the time and left when I was 7yrs 3mths. Re: Aryeh House School by Graham Redman 8 June 2023 9:15 AMI went to Aryeh House School in 1948 aged 3 years old with my twin brother Anthony who sadly died there in 1952 Re: Aryeh House School by Valerie Byron 26 June 2023 11:20 AMI attended the school from 1949 to 1950. I was seven years old when I arrived. The year at that school caused me so much trauma that even now, aged 80, I still remember it vividly. Most of the teachers were sadists. We were not allowed to write home, just had to copy what they told us. We were forced to drink sour milk and not allowed to use the toilet at meal times. I cannot believe that parents left very young children there. The place was an abomination, and certainly put me off religion forever. Re: Aryeh House School by douglas king 20 December 2023 11:24 AMMy brother and I were at the school about 1945 + and around 5 years old. I recall also copying a letter to send home. At birthdays the cake was cut up ad we had to give teachers first so not much left for us. At breakfast we had to sit at the table u ntil finishig the lumpy porridge. Mr O Brian, sadistic head teacher though not Jewish would loudly sing the grace after meals in Hebrew. Every afternoon we went for a log crocodile line walk on the downs. Sweets were still rationed but we would go to a shop and buy a tin of Ovaltine tablets. Re: Aryeh House School by David Nunes Vaz 9 FebruaryMy name is David Nunes Vaz and I was a pupil at AHS from 1947 till 1953 and greatly enjoyed my stay. I attended 2 reunions which were arranged by Manuel Golding and were quite well attended. Anyone remember me? Re: Aryeh House School by Rosalind Stuart yesterdayMy name is Rosalind Cooklin. I remember you well from AHS and you may remember Esther Feldman((who has since died). Like you, I greatly enjoyed my time at the school, loved the sport and we had a good education, which has served me well in my life. Seems lots of people have bad memories, but it was a good part of my life. Add your replyHiddenAdd your title Add your wordsWould you like to add some images (optional)?
