beard by serena 16 June 2009looking for information on dr charles izard beard of brighton wife emily any information would help11 replies Re: beard by Roy Grant 16 June 2009I was going to write back asking for some dates, but with a name like that, didn’t need to. The IGI has his marrriage at St Nicholas Church, Brighton to Emily Izard on 26 June 1860 and the 1867 street directory states “Beard Charles Izard, physician, then lived 64 Grand Parade. Nothing on the 1881 census, but I suspect the 1861 and 1871 census should have something and the Grand Parade address may also help you to search. They had at least 2 children baptised at the Chapel Royal, Brighton, Emily Elizabeth on 7th July 1865 and Edith Mary 14 Nov 1866. Copies of the marriage and those two birth certificates would also be a useful investment. Re: beard by Roy Grant 16 June 2009My findings seem to conflict with a Biography of a Charles Beard Izard who arrived in New Zealand on board the Avalanche in May 1860 (Marriage and Births of daughters in Brighton suggest that that was not your Charles though. St Nicholas baptisms have him as Charles Jerrold Beard (C J not C I) baptised there on 26 Dec 1827, son of William Day Beard (Gentleman) and his wife Elizabeth of German Place, Brighton. Could be that he dropped the Jerrold and took on his new wife’s surname of Izard as a second Christian name? His siblings were William Day Beard bapt 1821, living Ship Street George Beard bapt 1823, living German Place Edward Henry Beard bapt 1824, living German Place Juliana Sarah Beard bapt 1826, living Black Lion Street. Hope that helps, or does it confuse things further? Re: beard by Andy Grant 16 June 2009Hi Serena, Charles Izard Beard took up residence at 64, Grand Parade around 1860 and was there until around the early 1870’s. He was listed as a physician and was a Member of the Royal College of Physicians, having graduated from Cambridge University in 1855. He left Brighton to become a Medical Inspector of the Local Government Board, travelling over the country, but had returned to Brighton in the 1880’s to become Assistant Physician at the Sussex County Hospital and Physician to the Brighton and Hove Dispensary. He lived at 35, Freshfield Road and later at 4, German Place. In 1901 he had returned to London and was living in Hammersmith. Now here is a bit of a mystery for you: Charles’s father was stated to have been William Day Beard, and he is probably the Charles J. Beard who was christened at St. Nicholas on the 28th December 1827. However there was a christening on the same day of Charles Leonard Beard to the same parents. Oddly enough there was a Charles John Beard, MD recorded at 76, Grand Parade in the late 1850’s. Hope this helps Andy Re: beard by serena 16 June 2009i was looking for information on charles izard beard , of 64 grand parade brighton . thanks but it got very confusing because william day geard married elizabeth izard 30 nov 1820 one of there children was charles jerrold beard he married emily , now elizabeth had a brother called william izard he had eleven children with his wife rhoda dyer one being charles beard izard 1829-1904 birth place 58 west st brighton death place new zealand married a wife called mary hayward place of marriage st dunstans stepney on 29/11/1859 help serena Re: Beard by Roy Grant 17 June 2009There is a lot about a possible grandson, Charles Day Beard, whose badly burned papers exist in the National Archives in London. Young Charles appears on the 1901 census as a two year old living in Chailey village. The head of the household being William Henry Beard (aged 41 and running a grocery and drapery business on the village green) and his wife Katherine (aged 29). When the census was taken Charles had a sister Evelyn Emma Beard (aged four) and both had been born in Chailey. Another sister, Alison Mary Beard was born in 1903. Re: Beard by Roy Grant 17 June 2009Found your Charles Izard Beard on the 1881 census in Lacashire. He appears as: Chas.I.BEARD age 53 born Brighton, Sussex. Med Inspector CS Officer Local Govt Bd Phys MBHM Cantab Emily BEARD Wife age 53 born Brighton, Sussex Address 52 Promenade, North Meols, Lancashire PRO Ref RG11 3750 / 10 / Page 13 Re: Beard by serena 17 June 2009yes all this information is right because he was my great uncle and i have meet him several times. thanks Re: beard by cassius 13 January 2010In case this is of any interest to somebody, in 1907 Edith Mary Beard, one of the daughters of Charles Izard Beard, married my great-uncle, William Dunckley, who became the Vicar of Hammersmith. They did not have children. William died in 1917. William attended Balliol College, Oxford, from 1873 to 1876 and appears to have been the only member of any generation of the family in England to have achieved a University education. Re: beard by serena 27 January 2010thanks for that informatiom have you a date for her death , do you have any information about them , where they lived Re: beard by John Buckingham 22 March 2010I’ve just been doing some research on Charles Izard Beard and it seems that your previous respondents haven’t picked up his main claim to fame. He was the doctor with whom the Brighton Poisoner, Christiana Edmunds, was infatuated and whose wife she tried to poison in 1871. See my book, ‘Bitter Nemesis, the intimate History of Strychnine’ for an account of this. I’ve just been checking the medical registers and it’s clear that immediately after the case he had to lie low left Brighton and for 20 years occupied govt. posts in London, before in 1890 becoming a GP again in Shepherds Bush. It was such a scandal at the time because he clearly encouraged her and she was his patient, possibly a mental patient. See the national press and Brighton Newspapers of the period for trial reports his attemopts to back-pedal from the relationship. The sole surviving letter from her to him is quoted in full in W.H.Williamson, Annals of Crime; Some Extraordinary Women (1930)best wishesjohn (johnbuckingham@blueyonder.co.uk) Re: beard by serena 25 March 2010thanks for that information . i am related to him . i will now go at look for this information .thanks serena Add your replyHiddenAdd your title Add your wordsWould you like to add some images (optional)?
