The ‘ing’ comes from ‘ingas’, roughly meaning the tribe or people Blaecca. The ‘ton’ originally ‘tun’ is a classic of early Saxon place-names. There is debate over its exact meaning but one designation is that it is a Saxon reference to a pre-existing settlement[ie Romano-British].
