Boating Accident 1900

by david 24 July 2008

Maralyn Eden raised this query in June 2007 – It does seem to have a reply.
7 Bluejackets from the torpedo boat destroyer “HMS Desperate” were drowned 10/4/1900 off Brighton whilst in gigs’ rowing towards the West Pier in rough seas.
The deceased were:William H Hailstone, R E Cole,
A W V Gosford, J Stewart, T Gladwell,C P Fennah and Signalman Hockham.
On 14/4/1900, they were given a full military style funeral. Procession from the Town Hall to Brighton & Preston Cemetery.
Their graves are apparently located some 150 yards SE of the Church. However, I could not find them when I looked.
If anyone knows – pleasel let me know
