Brighton Clock Tower by Amanda 25 April 2010Do you know designed the clock in the clock tower. Was it designed by someone called Boxell?5 replies Re: Brighton Clock Tower by Roy Grant 25 April 2010There was too much clock tower info on the search bar so perhaps Tim Carders’s answer will suffice. He states it was designed by John Johnson for the Queen’s Jubilee and built 1888. Another question raised on this site was what was there beforehand. If you go by an 1867 map, it was something heagonal. Suggestions made are that it was a florists stall, a cab shelter, but the dot in the middle makes it look like it was a significant tree with a hexagonal fence or paved area around it. Re: Brighton Clock Tower by Andy Grant 25 April 2010Hi Amanda, There was previously a query asking whether the clock mechanism itself was built by Boxell. My answer at the time was given on the mailing list and hence does not appear on the site, but it was not Boxell. The movement is inscribed “GILLETT & CO., Manufacturers, 1888, CROYDON”. As Roy states the design of the tower was by John Johnson of London and it was built with a donation of £2,000 by James Willing. Magnus Volk designed the hydraulic gilded time ball on the top of the tower. Regards Andy Re: Brighton Clock Tower by Roy Grant 25 April 2010Had to do a second check just in case T Boxall was the builder rather than the clockmaker, for Carder’s description is a little ambiguous for it suggests T Boxall had a hand in the provision of a gateway and the two Aquarium Toll Booths provided at the same time. The 1881 census however states, Thomas Boxall, born Brighton 1823, was a local Master Watchmaker who employed 11 hands in his premises at 43 Kings Road, Brighton Re: Brighton Clock Tower by Roy Grant 25 April 2010I have now found that a T Boxall did design ‘A CLOCK TOWER’ in Brighton, but it was not the one at the intersection of Queens Road with North Street. It was the one added to the Brighton Aquarium in October 1874. Re: Brighton Clock Tower by mje 25 April 2010Hi Amanda Enter clock tower in the search bar above.
