Brighton Dome - Saxon burial ground? by Jules 10 February 2014Is anyone aware of there being a Saxon burial ground under the Dome or in the general area?5 replies Re: Brighton Dome - Saxon burial ground? by Geoffrey Mead 11 February 2014I am not aware of there being a burial ground there, although there was one discovered near Stafford Rd near BHASVIC some years ago. I suggest contacting the B&H Archaeological Society [Brighton’soldest amenity society founded in 1906] who would be the people most likely to know. Re: Brighton Dome - Saxon burial ground? by Roy Grant 12 February 2014As burial mounds were generally on the tops of hills, it would make the ground benaeath the Dome an unlikely site. I was however, given to understand that the name ‘HOVE’ was derived from a Norse word meaning burial mound, so perhaps a significant mound did exist further to the west. Re: Brighton Dome - Saxon burial ground? by Geoffrey Mead 13 February 2014It is possible that the Hove mound is referring to the tumulus that was in the area of Palmeira Avenue, where they found the Hove amber cup. Re: Brighton Dome - Saxon burial ground? by Andy Grant 14 February 2014Hi all, The message thread appears to have generated some spurious information: tumuli and barrows were characteristic of much earlier settlements than Saxon times. Early settlements around Brighton include neolithic, bronze age and Iron age sites. With Roman occupation it is considered that Brighton could have been a port and there have been roman finds dotted in and around the town. When the Romans left, the Saxons overran the county from around 410AD. The Knab is thought to have been the site of a Saxon settlement although I know of no direct evidence for a Saxon burial ground under the Dome. However, it is well documented that there was a cemetery under Market Street. I cannot recall any evidence that relates to Saxon burials there, but it would certainly be a good contender. Regards, Andy Re: Brighton Dome - Saxon burial ground? by Ron Porter 1 February 2020 6:33 PMThis is going to sound ridiculous, but years ago I heard a story of a couple of electricians working behind the panelling in the Dome, running new cables. One of them went to get some more reels of cable and while he was gone, the other electrician heard kids laughing and shouting through the wall, but where they were working was under the outside ground level, so he just got out of there toot sweet, & would not go back in.Now this smacks of an old ghost story, however, whilst working in the Metropole Hotel doing some renovation work, there was a couple of sub contract electricians on the same job that we had known for a couple of years, someone mentioned about if there were any ghosts in the hotel, and I remember mentioning about the Dome story, and one of the electricians said to me, “You can laugh, but I was petrified, and no money on this earth would get me to go back in there.” So these two electricians were the two mentioned in the story, told to me about four years earlier.
