Bunkers Hill by Sheila Jones 15 August 2007Does anybody know where Bunkers Hill was in Brighton, a local fisherman area ,l think?12 replies Re: Bunkers Hill by Andy Grant 15 August 2007Sheila, Bunkers Hill was purportedly named after a resident in the street, an old soldier, who fought in the battle of the same name. It was a turning off West Street, located around number 31. Regards Andy Re: Bunkers Hill by Sheila Jones 16 August 2007Thanks a lot Andy, you are the font of all Knowledge. Re: Bunkers Hill by Harry Kee 22 April 2020 9:37 AMMy Great Grandmother lived with her family at numbers 1 and 2 Bunkers Hill. Re: Bunkers Hill by janet fenner 12 October 2020 3:25 PMMy mother aged 4 lived in Bunkers Hill with her parents, brother and sister. Their surname was Cork. After squatting for some time because the place was due for demolition, the agent eventually accepted 2/6p rent. The house was an old fisherman’s cottage with just one room you stepped down into from a step outside. Stairs led to a bedroom then another flight leading to the attic. Obviously no electricity, only candles. The house walls were mostly wooden, even connecting to her neighbour’s name of “Savage”. Lots of mice and bugs. For the 12 houses standing around the flintstone courtyard, there was a bathhouse on one side with 2 stone sinks and two coppers for the laundry. Also in there were 2 toilets for females; the men’s toilets were round the back. She went to Middle Street school and has many memories of that area like, having to queue for stale bread at “Gigins” the bakers in West Street. On Sundays she went to St Pauls Church and also attended the Band of Hope in the Lanes. Also went to Brills Baths in North Road.On the 14th October she will be 106 and still lives independently in Brighton. Her early memories of Brighton are amazing. Re: Bunkers Hill by Geoffrey Mead 16 October 2020 9:56 AMJanet, I do not know if this is any use to you and your mum, but my Kelly’s directory 1914 shows this for Bunkers Hill, as Andy stated some time ago- ‘From 31 West St’:2 Mrs Girdle 3 Thomas Gretton 4 William hazelgrove 5 John Blackwell 6 Samuel Marchant 7 Lewis Gilbert 8 Mrs Martin 11 Lewis Why Re: Bunkers Hill by Geoffrey Mead 16 October 2020 9:57 AMJanet, this is absolutely ‘Gold Dust’ to local studies people! Thanks for putting it on the site. First hand accounts of such premises are rare and please say’ Thank You’ to your mum. And do keep talking to her and record what you can. My mum lived until she was 93 and grew up in a very poor area on the Bethnal Green/Hackney border in East London; as a 93 year old she often forgot who I was! but she had a vivid memory of her home area even down to describing her school, which was destroyed in the docklands Blitz in 1941. Re: Bunkers Hill by janet fenner 19 October 2020 9:45 AMMum was born 18 Whitelion Street Spitalfields London it is now renamed Folgate Street. In 1918 Bunkers Hill was up for demolition when my mother and family squatted for a while till the agent allowed them to stay. I can name the occupants approx of that time.1 Connals Madeline was her best friend till mum got married 2 Marchants 3 Thew 4 Single Lady she cannot remember her name 5 Savages 6 Cork – My Mother’s family 7 Blackman – he actually had his own garden 8 Mrs Brian 9 Ganders 10 On its own with double fronted door – 2 families lived there 11 and 12 she couldn’t remember. It suggests that the Marchants moved to number 2 after 1914. From mum’s writings she doesn’t talk of moving until she was about 11, so that brings us up to about 1929. The family then moved to 11 Nesbit Road off Coombe Road which had a front room, kitchen, bathroom toilet and coal cupboard in hall , 3 bedrooms upstairs and back and front garden. Re: Bunkers Hill by Brenda Keenan 7 June 2022 10:33 AMMy father and his 3 brothers and 2 sisters lived in Bunkers hill at number 9. His name was Tom Gander and brothers Jack, Arthur, can’t remember 3rd brother. Sisters Pat and Dorie .The family moved to Manor Farm when it was newly built. I think all the brothers at one point worked in the Hippodrome theatre doing various jobs. Most of the family continued to live and work in the Brighton area throughout there lives, including myself ( very rare Brightonian). Re: Bunkers Hill by Janet Fenner 16 June 2022 3:17 PMMum finally passed 5 days after her 107th birthday last October. Was in the Argus as was the oldest one in Brighton. She always spoke of Bunkers Hill with fondest memories except for using the toilets in the yard shared by all the tenants. She loved going to Middle Street school but not so much St Pauls in West street for Sunday school and evening services. She also loved the Band of Hope which was in the Lanes where she practised for the choir and many plays. One in particular was “The Old Woman in the Shoe”. Re: Bunkers Hill by Janet Fenner 19 May 2023 10:52 AMthank you Simon. Lovely seeing Aunty Lily’s postcard. In 2000 mum was part of an oral history project on behalf of the Brighton & Hove Museum and we are the proud owners of the tapes recorded by them with her telling of her younger days in Brighton. i believe her youngest sister Ivy who will be 100 this year, also had her picture in the museum as a clippy (bus conductress) for 2000.
